Many people turn to dietary supplements with the aim of improving sleep, increasing energy and focus, or compensating for deficiencies in certain nutrients. However, taking them without confirming the need for them or understanding their effects on medications being used can lead to health complications.
Experts have warned that some common supplements may increase the risk of bleeding, affect kidney and heart functions, or reduce the effectiveness of certain prescribed medications, especially when taken in high doses or in conjunction with other drugs, according to a report published by the British newspaper "Daily Mail."
Pharmacist Valvinder Deol from "Happy Pharmacy" stated that some supplements may alter the way a prescribed medication works or enhance its effects, emphasizing the importance of consulting a pharmacist before adding any new supplement for those who regularly take medications.
Magnesium and Medications
Magnesium is gaining increasing popularity, especially with the promotion of its role in improving sleep. It is a mineral found naturally in leafy greens, whole grains, nuts, and seeds, and it contributes to energy production, regulates the nervous system, and maintains bone health.
However, magnesium supplements may hinder the absorption of certain medications, including osteoporosis medications and "levothyroxine" used to treat hypothyroidism, as well as some antibiotics, which necessitates knowing the appropriate time interval between taking the supplement and the medication.
Turmeric and the Risk of Bleeding
Warnings also include high-concentration turmeric supplements containing "curcumin," which have been associated with potential benefits in alleviating joint pain, indigestion, and inflammation.
According to experts, high doses of curcumin may increase the risk of bleeding, especially in those taking medications that reduce the blood's ability to clot. Additionally, some high-dose supplements have been linked to an increased likelihood of kidney stones and affecting the efficacy of certain medications.
They clarified that these risks are primarily associated with concentrated supplements, not with using turmeric as part of a regular diet.
Iron is Not a Solution for All Cases of Fatigue
Experts have warned against taking iron supplements merely due to feelings of fatigue, stressing the need to first confirm an actual deficiency in iron levels.
Taking it without necessity may lead to constipation, nausea, and abdominal pain, without addressing the true cause of fatigue, which may be related to other health conditions.
Interactions with St. John's Wort
One herbal supplement that requires caution is St. John's Wort, used in some cases of mild to moderate depression, as it may interact with a wide range of medications, including antidepressants, hormonal contraceptives, blood thinners, and some cancer treatment drugs.
Using it alongside certain antidepressants may lead to excessively high serotonin levels and the occurrence of "serotonin syndrome," which may include symptoms such as confusion, agitation, rapid heartbeat, sweating, and tremors.
Salt and Potassium Substitutes
The risks are not limited to traditional supplements, as some salt substitutes and low-sodium products may contain high levels of potassium.
This could pose a risk to individuals taking certain blood pressure and heart disease medications that raise potassium levels, as well as to those with impaired kidney function.
Experts have warned that elevated potassium levels can significantly affect the heart, urging careful reading of the ingredients in salt substitutes and consulting a doctor or pharmacist before taking supplements, especially for those who regularly use medications.
