باشرت شرطة نيويورك التحقيق في حادثة مأساوية وقع فجر الأحد داخل محطة (سبرينغ ستريت) في مانهاتن، بعدما لقي شاب وفتاة، يبلغان 24 عامًا، مصرعهما دهسًا تحت قطار مترو أثناء جلوسهما على السكة الحديدية.
وبحسب روايات أولية من مصادر شرطية، وقعت الحادثة بعد الثالثة صباحًا بقليل، إذ كان الشاب على السكة بينما حاولت صديقته جذبه نحوها في لحظة سبقت وصول القطار رقم 4 بثوانٍ معدودة. وأظهرت تسجيلات كاميرات المحطة أن الفتاة كانت تضحك وهي تحاول سحب الشاب قبل أن يصطدم بهما القطار بقوة.
سائقة القطار أفادت بأنها شاهدت الشابين يجلسان على القضبان، مؤكدة أنها استخدمت فرامل الطوارئ فور رؤيتهما، إلا أن المسافة لم تكن كافية لتجنب الاصطدام.
وعند وصول فرق الطوارئ، عُثر على الضحيتين أسفل القطار وقد فارقا الحياة في الموقع، فيما جرى إجلاء نحو مئة راكب كانوا على متن القطار لحظة وقوع الحادث، وسط حالة من الذعر داخل المحطة.
The New York Police Department has begun investigating a tragic incident that occurred early Sunday morning inside the Spring Street station in Manhattan, after a young man and woman, both 24 years old, were killed when they were struck by a subway train while sitting on the tracks.
According to initial accounts from police sources, the incident happened shortly after 3 AM, as the young man was on the tracks while his girlfriend attempted to pull him towards her just seconds before the arrival of the No. 4 train. Surveillance footage from the station showed the girl laughing as she tried to pull the young man before the train collided with them forcefully.
The train operator reported that she saw the young couple sitting on the tracks, confirming that she applied the emergency brakes as soon as she saw them, but the distance was not enough to avoid the collision.
When emergency crews arrived, the victims were found beneath the train and had succumbed to their injuries at the scene, while about a hundred passengers who were on the train at the time of the incident were evacuated amid a state of panic inside the station.
