A recent scientific study revealed that subtle changes in pupil response may carry indicators related to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), especially during tasks that require focus and memory.
According to the study published in the journal "Scientific Reports," children with the disorder exhibited greater variability in pupil responses from one attempt to another, compared to children without neurodevelopmental disorders.
Researchers at the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology in Delhi reanalyzed previous data to track eye movement in 50 children aged between 10 and 12 years, including 28 children diagnosed with combined-type ADHD and 22 children without the disorder.
The results showed that the affected children who were not under the influence of medication recorded about 23% greater variability in pupil responses between attempts, compared to the control group.
The researchers also found that children who exhibited greater variability in pupil responses tended to provide less accurate answers during the test.
The researchers indicated that these changes may reflect shifts in attention levels or the degree of engagement in the task, but they emphasized that pupil movement disorder does not necessarily indicate an attention disorder.
Medication Effect
Children with ADHD underwent testing twice; first after stopping methylphenidate medication for 24 hours, and second after taking their usual dose.
The results showed that after taking the medication, pupil responses became stronger during the task, variability decreased between rounds, and the timing and shape of responses became more similar to those of children without the disorder.
The researchers stressed that these results are still in the early stages, and it is premature to adopt pupil measurements as a clinical tool for diagnosing Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
