In a dramatic ploy reminiscent of movie scenarios, an Arab businessman working in the import and export field woke up to the nightmare of losing his savings, after believing for months that he held the keys to the deal of a lifetime to buy a buried gold train in an unknown land.
The details that erupted in the Irbid Court of First Instance in Jordan revealed a highly complex fraudulent scheme aimed at robbing the victim's mind and enticing him with quick wealth before stripping him of his money step by step.
A Jew Carrying $6 Million
The deception began with a surprise visit to the businessman’s office, where the visitor claimed to possess gold pieces, before the conversation evolved into the existence of a "huge archaeological treasure" within a piece of land whose owner was looking for a buyer capable of paying its astronomical value.
To tighten the trap on the victim, a secret meeting was arranged where a person was introduced, said to be a "mysterious investor of Jewish origin," who arrived carrying a massive black bag that revealed $6 million (cash) inside, with one of the network members "inspecting" the money and convincing the investor of its authenticity, promising to share the millions as soon as the treasure was extracted.
Once the victim accepted the reality of the scam, he fell into the trap, and the network began a systematic financial drain under the guise of fees and field preparations:
- 2000 dinars: Initial fees for site preparation.
- 4600 dinars: For renting a bulldozer and heavy excavation equipment.
- 5000 dinars: Under the pretext of lifting a mortgage registered on the land.
- 1400 dinars: To expedite quick administrative transactions.
The demands did not stop there; a new claim was fabricated requiring additional payments to facilitate the visit of the "daughter of the company owner" to the site, bringing the total amount paid by the victim to over 18,000 Jordanian dinars, without seeing a single dollar of the promised $6 million.
A Legal Loophole Cancels Imprisonment
In light of the compelling evidence, the court issued its initial ruling convicting the defendants of fraud by conspiracy, sentencing each to two years in prison and a fine of 500 dinars.
However, the case witnessed an unexpected legal turn when one of the defendants filed an official objection after the victim dropped his personal right. Upon reviewing the defendant's criminal record, it was found to be free of similar crimes.
Based on the provisions of Article 52 of the Penal Code, the court decided to annul the previous ruling and dismiss the public prosecution case against the objecting defendant, thus concluding one of the strangest fraud cases with a judicial decision subject to appeal.
