The idea of suffering from a blood clot due to carrying a heavy backpack may seem unlikely, but a doctor has warned that this can happen in rare cases, especially when carrying heavy weights coincides with repetitive arm movements or continuous pressure on the shoulder area.
A blood clot essentially forms when blood cells and other materials gather to create a semi-solid mass within blood vessels, which is a natural mechanism that helps the body stop bleeding when injured.
However, the problem arises when the clot obstructs normal blood flow, which can lead in some cases to serious, life-threatening complications.
How can a heavy bag lead to a clot?
Dr. Kunal Sood, a resident physician in Maryland, USA, specializing in anesthesiology and interventional pain medicine, explained that carrying a heavy bag on the shoulder can, in rare cases, lead to the formation of a blood clot in the shoulder or arm area.
The doctor pointed out that there is a vein that runs in the space between the collarbone and the first rib, explaining that this space can be relatively narrow in some individuals.
If this is combined with repetitive arm movements, lifting heavy weights, or continuous pressure on the shoulder area, the vein may be compressed or irritated to a degree that contributes to the formation of a blood clot.
Sood clarified that this condition is sometimes referred to as effort-related upper extremity deep vein thrombosis and can occur even in young individuals who do not have known health issues.
Is everyone who carries a heavy bag at risk of a clot?
The doctor confirmed that the majority of people can carry backpacks without developing blood clots, emphasizing that the occurrence of a clot as a result of carrying a heavy bag is a rare event and not an expected outcome of simply using a backpack.
However, certain conditions, such as continuous overloading, repetitive use of the arm, and ongoing pressure on the shoulder, may increase the likelihood of the problem in individuals who have an anatomical predisposition to it.
Therefore, carrying a heavy bag does not automatically mean that a person is at risk of developing a clot; rather, the danger is associated with a combination of factors.
How can you reduce the risk of a clot while carrying a bag?
The doctor provided several tips that can be followed to reduce pressure on the shoulder area and blood vessels, including:
Avoid overloading the bag and ensure that its weight is reasonable.
Use both shoulder straps instead of carrying the bag on one shoulder.
Ensure that the bag straps do not press too hard on the shoulders or cause pain and numbness.
Remove the bag during long periods of travel or walking whenever possible to reduce continuous pressure on the shoulders.
Be attentive to the appearance of unusual symptoms in one of the arms.
Signs Worth Noting
Among the most notable signs that should not be ignored, according to the doctor, are sudden swelling in one arm, feelings of heaviness, changes in arm color, or the appearance of larger and more prominent veins than usual.
These symptoms do not necessarily indicate the presence of a clot, but they warrant medical evaluation, especially if they appear suddenly or increase over time.
The importance of paying attention to these signs lies in the fact that deep vein clots can lead to serious complications if the clot dislodges and travels to the lungs.
In general, maintaining an appropriate weight for the bag, distributing the load evenly across the shoulders, and avoiding continuous pressure on one area are simple steps that help reduce problems associated with carrying heavy weights.
