Amid allegations of political revenge and reports of disappearances in the depths of African prisons, a young Egyptian's journey into the unknown began after living 27 years in Washington. In a disturbing development that raises concerns among human rights organizations, American attorney Kate O'Donnell announced the arrest of her Egyptian client Ahmed Suleiman (30 years old) and his transfer to an unknown location after arriving in Equatorial Guinea, following his forced deportation from the United States and his fiery statements that revealed legal violations against deportees.
The young man, who had lived in America since he was a three-year-old child and enjoyed legal residency protection, was forced to leave U.S. territory as part of President Donald Trump's strict immigration policies, finding himself deported to an African country that is not his own and that he had never known.
Upon his arrival at his first detention facility, Suleiman did not remain silent; he made bold statements to the French news agency, revealing terrifying details about armed police officers storming his room in the hotel where he was held and forcibly taking him along with 20 other individuals, in a clear public indication to compel them to leave.
The young Egyptian did not stop there; he continued to communicate with newspapers and media outlets, exposing the violations and harsh practices faced by forcibly deported individuals, which the authorities considered a red line that warranted a response.
In Guinea, local authorities surprised Ahmed Suleiman with his arrest under a flimsy pretext, claiming he had "broken a mirror"! His attorney stated: "The charges against him are fabricated and unclear... the arrest clearly appears to be a retaliatory reaction because he was fully aware of his rights and dared to speak with journalists."
While there is a complete silence from the official authorities in Guinea, a team of volunteer lawyers in the capital Malabo is making diligent efforts to search for him inside prisons and detention centers, amid real fears for his safety after his news completely vanished following the arrest.
