35 people have been confirmed dead and 54 others are still missing following a devastating fire that broke out aboard a ferry off the coast of the Philippines, before the flames nearly engulfed the entire ship within seconds, in a maritime disaster that left dozens of casualties.
30 bodies arrived at a port near Coron City on Palawan Island on Saturday morning after being recovered from the M/V June Aster ferry, which ran aground near a tourist area.
Coast Guard spokesperson Naomi Kayabiab said during a press conference on Saturday that the victims' remains will be handed over to police forensic investigators for proper handling and identification before local authorities are allowed to inform the victims' families.
She added, "We are currently focused on recovering the bodies, and after that, we will begin the investigation," confirming that the bodies found were located in the area designated for economy class on the ferry.
Shortly after the press conference ended, police investigators were seen arriving at the port to begin procedures for examining the bodies and identifying their owners.
When asked by Kayabiab about the number of bodies still inside the ferry, she said authorities would announce an update on that later on Saturday.
The spokesperson had clarified to Agence France-Presse on Friday evening that the initial transfer operation was limited to 30 bodies due to the capacity of the patrol boat that took the victims, noting that other bodies were still inside the ferry.
Five additional deaths were confirmed shortly after the fire broke out.
Photos released by the Coast Guard showed rows of body bags being transferred to a small boat, while men in hazardous material suits were seen carrying out the operation.
So far, 30 passengers and 13 crew members have survived, while 54 people remain missing.
Fire Spread Within Seconds
Kayabiab had told a radio station on Friday that the fire started in the cargo hold before spreading rapidly throughout the ship.
She explained, citing survivor accounts, that the fire began after a "loud explosion," followed by smoke and then flames, confirming that the fire "spread very quickly."
She added, "Everything happened within seconds," noting that some who managed to leave the ferry didn't even have time to put on life jackets.
Families Searching for the Missing
As search operations continued, relatives of the missing arrived in Coron City hoping to find their loved ones or learn their fate.
In a scene reflecting the level of anxiety among the families, hundreds of people turned to the Facebook page of a local mayor, leaving comments in search of missing relatives and friends, even a dog that was on board the ferry.
134 People on Board the Ferry
According to the passenger and crew list, the ferry was supposed to carry 134 people, but the Coast Guard clarified that two people listed did not board the ship.
The ferry was also transporting several goods, along with an electric vehicle, a small truck, and several motorcycles when the fire broke out.
The disaster brings to the forefront the record of maritime incidents in the Philippines, an archipelagic country with a population of about 116 million, which has a long history of disasters related to inter-island ferries.
Millions of Filipinos rely on low-cost boats and ships to travel between more than 7,000 islands, despite ongoing criticism regarding poor regulation and the recurrence of ferry accidents.
For its part, Atienza Interisland Ferries Inc, the owner of the M/V June Aster ferry, announced on Thursday that it is fully cooperating with ongoing investigations to determine the circumstances and causes of the fire and to establish responsibilities.
