Sitting for long hours in front of a computer and participating in meetings throughout the workday is no longer just a lifestyle that causes some temporary back pain; experts warn that the lack of movement associated with office jobs may gradually affect bone health and the musculoskeletal system, especially in women.
Medical warnings, according to Hindustan Times, indicate that recurring back or knee pain in women may not merely be a result of daily stress, but in some cases could represent an early sign of bone weakness, which necessitates attention to lifestyle, hormonal, and nutritional factors related to bone health.
A Doctor Warns Working Women
For his part, Dr. Harsh Bhargava, an orthopedic surgery consultant at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals in Delhi, warned against ignoring recurring body pains in working women, noting that they may sometimes be an early and silent sign of bone weakness.
He explained that women are more susceptible to certain bone health issues due to hormonal changes, particularly the gradual decline in estrogen levels. This hormone plays an important role in maintaining bone and musculoskeletal health.
This problem typically becomes more apparent during the pre-menopausal and menopausal stages, when estrogen levels begin to decline significantly.
Bone Weakness Is No Longer Just Age-Related
Worryingly, according to the doctor, signs of bone weakness are no longer limited to older women or those in the post-menopausal stage.
He pointed out that an increasing number of women in their twenties and thirties may show early signs of bone weakness, without necessarily realizing the reasons behind these issues.
This is linked, among other factors, to the sedentary office lifestyle that relies on prolonged sitting and limits normal daily movement.
What Is the "9 to 5 Effect"?
The doctor refers to this issue as the "9 to 5 Effect," alluding to the traditional work pattern where employees spend long hours sitting at their desks.
Bones, like muscles, require regular movement to maintain their strength. However, long hours of sitting, lack of movement, and consuming fast or unbalanced meals during work hours can accumulate their effects over time.
Additionally, the busy schedules of female employees throughout the day may reduce their exposure to sunlight, which the body needs to help produce vitamin D, essential for calcium absorption and utilization.
Moreover, fast food consumed at the desk may not provide enough protein, while excessive consumption of tea or coffee can affect the body's ability to utilize certain essential nutrients.
Signs That Should Not Be Ignored
Since bone weakness develops gradually, its early signs may go unnoticed. Among the most prominent symptoms that warrant attention are:
- Persistent or recurring pain in the back or knees.
- Feeling fatigued and exhausted without a clear reason.
- Curvature of the back or the appearance of a hunched posture.
- Gradual loss of height.
- Declining gum health or weak nails.
These symptoms do not necessarily indicate bone weakness, but they may warrant a consultation with a doctor for evaluation, especially if they persist or multiple signs are present.
Hormonal Changes
Bone health in women is particularly significant due to its connection to hormonal changes, which is why regular menstrual cycles can be one of the indicators that help the doctor assess potential risks.
Dr. Bhargava clarified that decreased estrogen levels can lead to increased bone loss; therefore, irregular menstrual cycles, early menopause, or prolonged absence of menstruation may be associated with an increased risk of losing bone density even before the usual age for bone density tests.
A family history is also an important factor, especially for women who have family members with osteoporosis.
In such cases, discussing the possibility of a bone density test with a doctor can be beneficial; it is a simple and painless test that can help detect bone weakness at an early stage.
How Can Women Maintain Bone Strength?
Some simple lifestyle changes can help support bone health, with the most notable tips being:
- Getting appropriate sun exposure according to health guidelines.
- Getting up from the desk and moving at least once every hour.
- Ensuring the intake of protein and calcium sources in the daily diet.
- Walking regularly and using the stairs instead of the elevator when appropriate.
- Engaging in weight-bearing exercises and activities that stimulate bones and muscles.
- Paying attention to calcium and vitamin D levels and consulting a doctor or nutritionist about individual needs.
