In shocking statements that sparked a wave of controversy on social media platforms, Egyptian Al-Azhar preacher Khalil Amin called on young people to refrain from taking the step of marriage if they do not have sufficient financial resources to cover the basic necessities of life.
Amin emphasized that financial capability is a religious and essential condition that precedes the decision to marry, stressing that relying on common sayings without real work or income is a form of laziness and a misrepresentation of religion.
Among the most notable points of the controversial fatwa expressed by the Al-Azhar preacher:
- 10,000 pounds minimum: The preacher set a monthly income of 10,000 pounds or more (in the case of renting) as a rough standard for those who meet the condition of financial capability to establish a household.
- The difference between poverty and inability: He clarified that a poor person may have the minimum to manage their livelihood, while someone who cannot pay rent and buy medicine is "not capable at all," and religious law requires them to practice abstinence and fasting.
- The position of Sharia and religion: He cited the verse from the Quran: ﴿And let those who find not the financial means for marriage keep themselves chaste until Allah enriches them out of His bounty﴾, and the hadith of the Prophet ﷺ: "Whoever among you can marry, let him do so," affirming that capability is a principle and not merely an aspect of wealth.
- The reality of divine assistance: He explained that the noble hadith "There are three whom Allah has made it a duty to assist... among them is the one who seeks marriage" refers to the one who is capable of marriage, and that divine assistance comes as blessings, success, and steadfastness, not necessarily in the form of flowing money.
The Al-Azhar preacher concluded his remarks by emphasizing that he does not call for the prohibition of marriage or to frighten young people, but rather demands rational and realistic calculations for living, asserting that "Islam is a religion of reason, reliance, and causes, not of mysticism, laziness, and empty talk."
