Australia has recorded 538 cases of diphtheria since the beginning of the year, marking the largest outbreak of the disease in the country since national data collection began in 1991.
The increase has raised concerns among health authorities, with the majority of cases concentrated in the Northern Territory and Western Australia, alongside reported infections in South Australia and Queensland.
This year's total exceeds the previous highest annual count by more than 17 times, as the country recorded 31 cases in 2022.
Official health data indicated that infections peaked between late May and early June, before declining in recent weeks.
Diphtheria spreads through respiratory droplets or direct contact with the skin of an infected person, while vaccination is the primary line of defense against the disease.
A significant proportion of infections are concentrated among Indigenous populations in remote and semi-remote areas.
The Australian federal government has announced the allocation of 13 million Australian dollars to support affected states and territories in combating the outbreak.
What is diphtheria?
Diphtheria is a contagious bacterial disease caused by the bacterium "Corynebacterium diphtheriae," primarily affecting the upper respiratory tract, especially the nose and throat, and can affect the skin in some cases.
The infection is usually transmitted through respiratory droplets produced by coughing or sneezing, or through direct contact with the secretions of an infected person or with infected skin.
Some of the most prominent symptoms of the disease include sore throat, fever, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck, and a thick gray layer may form in the throat, which can lead to difficulty breathing in severe cases. Some strains of the bacteria produce a toxin that can cause serious complications, including damage to the heart and nerves.
Vaccination is the primary means of preventing diphtheria, while treatment for infected cases relies on early medical intervention, including the use of antibiotics and diphtheria antitoxin as needed.
