A scientific study conducted by researchers from Nagoya University in Japan has revealed an important role for the protein "C3" in enhancing the immune system's ability to combat cancerous tumors, in a discovery that could contribute to the development of more effective treatments for cancers that resist immunotherapy in the future.
The results of the study, published in the journal "Nature Communications," showed that the presence of the protein within the tissues surrounding the tumor plays a key role in regulating the immune environment of the tumor by reducing the accumulation of immunosuppressive myeloid cells, which can hinder the immune system's response to cancer cells.
Experiments conducted on animal models, along with the analysis of samples from lung cancer patients, indicated a correlation between elevated levels of "C3" in the tissues surrounding the tumor and improved therapeutic response, as well as increased survival rates.
The researchers point out that the results of the study open the door to developing therapeutic strategies aimed at increasing protein levels within tumors, alongside studying the optimal timing for using these strategies, which could enhance the chances of treating types of cancer that do not respond adequately to available immunotherapies.
The research team hopes that these results will help transform the environment surrounding the tumor from a factor that limits immune effectiveness to a more supportive environment for the body's natural and therapeutic response against cancer cells.
