At a time when most prefer calm and relaxation, British grandmother Betty Bromage (97 years old) decided to shatter the illusions of aging, as she climbed onto the wing of a twin-engine plane soaring in the sky, officially entering the Guinness World Records as the oldest woman in the world to practice wing walking while in flight.
Betty's journey, a retired nurse, began about 10 years ago after the death of her husband with whom she lived for 51 years. After moving to a nursing home, she refused to succumb to daily routine and boredom:
- Refusal of inactivity: Betty hated the idea of spending the day lying in bed while others took care of everything, so she sought a goal that would give her life new vitality.
- Old dream: The idea dates back to 1991 when she saw a commercial featuring a woman standing on a plane, and the image remained etched in her memory until she decided to turn it into reality.
The bold adventure that took off from RFC Rendcomb Airport was not just in search of excitement, but carried a noble humanitarian message:
- Support for the hospital: Betty utilized her airborne flight to raise funds for Cheltenham General Hospital, which provided her with exceptional medical care after she suffered a stroke last year.
- Victory over illness: Despite her previous health setback, the grandmother flew steadily, affirming that passion can overcome health crises.
With spontaneity and a cheerful spirit, Betty described the experience of standing on the wing as "very easy," noting that the biggest challenge for her was her short stature, which made reaching the wing difficult. She said, "Once you get up there, it becomes simple."
Betty drew her courage from a phrase she read long ago on the wall of a hospital where she worked, urging people to seize opportunities, do good, and not postpone their goals. As she approaches her 100th year, she confirms that she has no plans to stop but is preparing for a new challenge to celebrate a century of life.
It can be said that aging does not mean stopping the experience of all that is new... passion and adventure continue at every stage of life.
