In a security operation that revealed extensive secret activity, Algerian authorities managed to dismantle a network specialized in smuggling precious metals in the capital, Algiers, after precise investigations led to the seizure of large quantities of gold, silver, and other metals, in addition to a substantial amount of money believed to be linked to its illegal activities.
According to security sources, the value of the seized funds amounted to approximately 38 billion Algerian centimes, which is about 3 million US dollars, along with quantities of metals that were prepared for smuggling out of the country through illegal routes.
The threads of the case began to emerge following intelligence information about the movements of an organized network active in collecting and smuggling large quantities of precious metals to foreign markets away from oversight, prompting the capital's police to initiate intensive monitoring and tracking operations that enabled them to identify its members and uncover their methods of operation.
Initial investigations revealed that the network's members come from different nationalities, including irregular migrants and foreign nationals, and that they employed complex methods to transport shipments and attempt to bypass security checkpoints while concealing the nature of the smuggled materials.
During the operation, security forces seized more than 10 kilograms and 630 grams of pure gold, in addition to about 3 kilograms and 81 grams of raw silver, which were prepared for trade and smuggling outside the legal framework.
The seizures also included other quantities of metals, including about 8 kilograms and 349 grams of copper, and nearly 3 kilograms and 434 grams of iron, amid security estimates that the presence of these lower-value metals may be part of a camouflage strategy to hide the true shipments and facilitate their passage.
