At a time when temperatures began to touch suffocating tropical levels, France found itself facing a scorching summer that took the breath away from a third of its territory, forcing major tourist attractions to close their doors early for fear that the streets would turn into open ovens and surprise fires would break out.
The French meteorological agency declared a maximum alert of "red level" in the capital Paris and large areas of the west of the country, warning that this record heatwave would continue until the middle of next week. This decision came after thermometers broke the 40 degrees Celsius barrier in several cities, and approached 37 degrees in the heart of Paris.
This suffering is not limited to France alone; several European countries have been enduring an unprecedented heatwave for weeks, forcing governments to take strict precautionary measures that included canceling sporting events and tourist activities, in an attempt to control the crisis and protect the population from weather conditions that have begun to resemble those of the equatorial region.
