أُزيل اسم الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب من واجهة مركز جون إف. كينيدي للفنون الأدائية فجر يوم السبت، بعد ساعات من انتهاء الموعد النهائي الذي حددته المحكمة يوم الجمعة لإزالة أي إشارة إليه من المبنى وجوانب أخرى من عمليات هذا الصرح الفني الشهير.
وبدأ العمال في رفع السقالات وإزالة الحروف التي تضيف اسم ترمب إلى الواجهة الرئيسية للمركز، وذلك بعد تجاوز مهلة منتصف ليل الجمعة بسبب عوامل جوية ولوجستية.
وكان القاضي الفيدرالي كريستوفر كوبر قد أمر بإزالة الاسم خلال 14 يوماً، مؤكداً أن إضافة اسم ترمب إلى التسمية الرسمية للمركز كان إجراءً غير قانوني.
وأصبح المركز يُعرف رسمياً مرة أخرى باسم «مركز جون إف. كينيدي للفنون الأدائية»، بعد إزالة عبارات مثل «Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts» و«Trump Kennedy Center» من الواجهة والموقع الإلكتروني وجميع الوثائق الرسمية.
ويعود الجدل إلى ديسمبر الماضي، عندما عيّن الرئيس ترمب مجلس إدارة جديداً موالياً له في مركز كينيدي، وقام المجلس بتعديل التسمية الرسمية للمركز ليشمل اسم ترمب، كما خطط لإغلاق المبنى لمدة عامين لأعمال تجديد.
ورفع نشطاء ومعارضون دعوى قضائية معتبرين أن القانون الذي أصدره الكونغرس عام 1964 يحدد اسم المركز تكريماً للرئيس الراحل جون إف. كينيدي فقط، ولا يحق لأي إدارة أو مجلس إدارة تغييره دون موافقة الكونغرس.
في 29 مايو الماضي، أصدر القاضي كوبر حكماً يقضي ببطلان إعادة التسمية، وأمر بإزالة اسم ترمب من كل مظاهر المركز، كما أوقف خطة الإغلاق المؤقت. ورغم تقديم استئناف من قبل إدارة ترمب ومجلس الإدارة، إلا أن المحكمة رفضت طلب وقف تنفيذ الحكم، ما دفع إلى البدء الفعلي في الإزالة فجر السبت.
ويُعد مركز كينيدي أحد أبرز المعالم الثقافية في العاصمة الأمريكية، ويستضيف سنوياً عشرات العروض الموسيقية، المسرحية، والباليه، ويحظى بأهمية رمزية كبيرة كتكريم وطني للرئيس كينيدي.
The name of U.S. President Donald Trump was removed from the facade of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts early Saturday morning, just hours after the court's deadline on Friday to remove any reference to him from the building and other aspects of this famous cultural institution.
Workers began dismantling the scaffolding and removing the letters that added Trump's name to the center's main facade, after missing the Friday midnight deadline due to weather and logistical factors.
Federal Judge Christopher Cooper had ordered the name to be removed within 14 days, affirming that adding Trump's name to the official designation of the center was an illegal act.
The center is officially known once again as the "John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts," after phrases like "Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts" and "Trump Kennedy Center" were removed from the facade, the website, and all official documents.
The controversy dates back to last December when President Trump appointed a new board of directors loyal to him at the Kennedy Center, which then amended the official designation of the center to include Trump's name and planned to close the building for two years for renovations.
Activists and opponents filed a lawsuit arguing that the law passed by Congress in 1964 designates the center's name in honor of the late President John F. Kennedy only, and that no administration or board of directors has the right to change it without congressional approval.
On May 29, Judge Cooper issued a ruling declaring the renaming invalid and ordered the removal of Trump's name from all aspects of the center, also halting the temporary closure plan. Despite an appeal from Trump's administration and the board, the court denied the request to stay the ruling, leading to the actual removal starting early Saturday.
The Kennedy Center is one of the most prominent cultural landmarks in the U.S. capital, hosting dozens of musical, theatrical, and ballet performances each year, and holds significant symbolic importance as a national tribute to President Kennedy.
