أعلنت وزيرة الأمن الداخلي الأمريكية كريستي نويم، إصدار توجيهات إلى دائرة خدمات المواطنة والهجرة بتعليق العمل مؤقتًا ببرنامج تأشيرة التنوع، معتبرة أن البرنامج أسهم في دخول مشتبه به في هجمات استهدفت جامعة براون ومعهد ماساتشوستس للتكنولوجيا إلى الولايات المتحدة.
ويتيح برنامج تأشيرة التنوع، المعروف بـ«يانصيب الهجرة»، منح ما يصل إلى 50 ألف تأشيرة سنويًا لمهاجرين من دول ذات معدلات هجرة منخفضة إلى الولايات المتحدة، بحسب الموقع الرسمي للدائرة.
وبحسب ما أفاد به قائد شرطة بروفيدنس في ولاية رود آيلاند، أوسكار بيريز، فإن المشتبه به في حادثة إطلاق النار بجامعة براون، كلاوديو نيفيس فالنتي، وهو مواطن برتغالي، دخل الولايات المتحدة عام 2000 بتأشيرة طالب، قبل أن يحصل على الإقامة الدائمة في عام 2017.
وأكدت السلطات العثور على فالنتي ميتًا مساء الخميس، بعد أن أقدم على إطلاق النار على نفسه.
وفي تعليقها على منصة «إكس»، قالت نويم: «لم يكن ينبغي السماح لهذا الفرد الشنيع بدخول بلادنا من الأساس»، في إشارة إلى موقف الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب، الذي طالما عارض برنامج تأشيرة التنوع.
وتأتي هذه الخطوة في سياق سياسات أكثر صرامة تنتهجها إدارة ترمب تجاه الهجرة، حيث سبق أن فرضت قيودًا واسعة على دخول مواطني أفغانستان ودول أخرى، عقب هجوم دموي في نوفمبر الماضي استهدف أفرادًا من الحرس الوطني الأمريكي.
U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristjen Nielsen announced the issuance of directives to the Citizenship and Immigration Services to temporarily suspend the Diversity Visa Program, considering that the program contributed to the entry of a suspect in the attacks targeting Brown University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology into the United States.
The Diversity Visa Program, known as the "Green Card Lottery," allows for the issuance of up to 50,000 visas annually to immigrants from countries with low immigration rates to the United States, according to the official website of the agency.
According to Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez in Rhode Island, the suspect in the Brown University shooting incident, Claudio Neves Valente, a Portuguese citizen, entered the United States in 2000 on a student visa before obtaining permanent residency in 2017.
Authorities confirmed that Valente was found dead on Thursday evening after he reportedly shot himself.
In her comments on the platform "X," Nielsen stated: "This heinous individual should never have been allowed to enter our country in the first place," referring to the stance of President Donald Trump, who has long opposed the Diversity Visa Program.
This move comes as part of stricter immigration policies pursued by the Trump administration, which has previously imposed broad restrictions on the entry of citizens from Afghanistan and other countries following a bloody attack last November that targeted members of the U.S. National Guard.
