يواجه بطل الملاكمة الإيراني محمد جواد وفائي ثاني، البالغ من العمر 30 عاماً، خطر الإعدام الوشيك بعد رفض المحكمة العليا في إيران طلبه بإعادة المحاكمة يوم 15 ديسمبر الجاري، وفقاً لصحيفة «الغارديان».
اعتقال ملاكم إيراني بعد احتجاجات 2019
واعتقل وفائي ثاني، من مدينة مشهد شمال شرق إيران، في عام 2020 بسبب مشاركته في الاحتجاجات الديمقراطية الواسعة النطاق عام 2019، واتُهم بدعم منظمة مجاهدي خلق الإيرانية (MEK)، المعارضة للنظام، وقضى خمس سنوات في السجن.
رفض طلب إعادة المحاكمة
وفي اليوم نفسه الذي رفضت فيه المحكمة طلب الإعادة، سُمح لوالدته بزيارته بشكل غير متوقع، وهو إجراء يعتبره النشطاء إشارة محتملة لقرب تنفيذ الحكم، كما أبلغت إدارة السجن العائلة هاتفياً بأن ملفه نقل إلى قسم تنفيذ الأحكام في مشهد.
دعوات لوقف تنفيذ الإعدام
وقال شاهين غوبادي، من لجنة الشؤون الخارجية في المجلس الوطني للمقاومة الإيرانية: «حياته في خطر جسيم، وقد يتم تنفيذ حكم الإعدام في أي لحظة».
وحُكم على وفائي ثاني بـ«الإفساد في الأرض» وصدر بحقه حكم إعدام للمرة الثالثة في سبتمبر 2024، وأيدت المحكمة العليا الحكم في أكتوبر الماضي.
فيما دعت ناسم باباياني، مسؤولة حملات إيران في منظمة العفو الدولية، السلطات الإيرانية إلى وقف فوري لأي خطط لتنفيذ الإعدام، وإلغاء الإدانة والحكم.
وأكدت أن تهمة «الإفساد في الأرض» لا تتوافق مع مبادئ الشرعية والوضوح في القانون الدولي، وأن المحاكم الثورية تفتقر إلى الاستقلال وتصدر أحكاماً قاسية بعد محاكمات غير عادلة.
رياضيون يناشدون لوقف الإعدام
وفي نوفمبر الماضي، وقع أكثر من 20 رياضياً دولياً حاصلين على ميداليات أولمبية، بما فيهم لاعبة التنس مارتينا نافراتيلوفا والسباحة شارون ديفيز، رسالة تدعو إلى وقف الإعدام.
كما أصدر ماوريسيو سليمان، رئيس مجلس الملاكمة العالمي (WBC)، بياناً يقول فيه: «الملاكمة رياضة تلهم الشجاعة والاحترام والسعي للتطور الذاتي، لا سبب للعقاب السياسي، إعدام ملاكم وبطل لتعبيره عن أفكاره هجوم مباشر على قيم الرياضة والكرامة الإنسانية».
وفي 2023، كتب أكثر من 100 خبير حقوقي ومنظمة رسالة إلى مفوض الأمم المتحدة لحقوق الإنسان فولكر تورك، يطالبون باتخاذ إجراءات لمنع إعدام الرياضي.
The Iranian boxing champion Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani, 30 years old, faces imminent execution after the Iranian Supreme Court rejected his request for a retrial on December 15, according to the Guardian.
Arrest of Iranian Boxer Following 2019 Protests
Vafaei Sani, from the city of Mashhad in northeastern Iran, was arrested in 2020 for participating in the widespread democratic protests of 2019 and was accused of supporting the Iranian opposition group, the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (MEK). He has spent five years in prison.
Rejection of Retrial Request
On the same day that the court rejected the retrial request, his mother was unexpectedly allowed to visit him, a procedure that activists consider a potential sign of the imminent execution of his sentence. The prison administration also informed the family by phone that his file had been transferred to the enforcement department in Mashhad.
Calls to Halt Execution
Shahin Ghubadi, from the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, stated: “His life is in grave danger, and the execution could be carried out at any moment.”
Vafaei Sani was sentenced to “corruption on earth” and received a death sentence for the third time in September 2024, which was upheld by the Supreme Court last October.
Nasim Babaei, Iran Campaigns Officer at Amnesty International, urged the Iranian authorities to immediately halt any plans for execution and to overturn the conviction and sentence.
She emphasized that the charge of “corruption on earth” does not align with the principles of legality and clarity in international law, and that revolutionary courts lack independence and issue harsh sentences after unfair trials.
Athletes Urge to Stop Execution
Last November, more than 20 international athletes who are Olympic medalists, including tennis player Martina Navratilova and swimmer Sharon Davies, signed a letter calling for a halt to the execution.
Mauricio Suleiman, President of the World Boxing Council (WBC), also issued a statement saying: “Boxing is a sport that inspires courage, respect, and the pursuit of self-improvement; there is no reason for political punishment. Executing a boxer and champion for expressing his thoughts is a direct attack on the values of sport and human dignity.”
In 2023, over 100 human rights experts and organizations wrote a letter to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, demanding action to prevent the execution of the athlete.
