شهدت رحلة الخطوط الجوية الألاسكية رقم 87 المتجهة من ديد هورس إلى أنكوريج، موقفاً مرعباً بعد أن حاول أحد الركاب فتح باب المقصورة الخلفي على ارتفاع 18 ألف قدم، صارخاً: «سنموت جميعاً».
الراكب كاسيان ويليام فريدريكس، بدأ بسلوك غريب أثناء استخدامه دورة المياه، ثم حاول بعنف فتح باب الطائرة، ما أدى إلى حالة من الفزع بين الركاب والطاقم. الشهود أكدوا أن ذراع الباب تحركت للأعلى، ما استدعى تدخلهم لمنعه، ورغم أن الطيار أوضح لاحقاً أن فتح الباب أثناء الطيران مستحيل عملياً بسبب ضغط الهواء، لكن التلاعب كان كافياً لتفعيل آلية الانزلاق الطارئ وإحداث أضرار جسيمة.
وكشفت التحقيقات أن الراكب كان في حالة غير طبيعية، إذ اعترف بأنه تناول الكحول وأدوية مضادة للاكتئاب، كما شعر بفقدان ذاكرة السنوات الماضية، وادعى سماع أصوات وغرائب عن الميثامفيتامين تتسرب من فتحات التهوية. كما طلب مراراً تدخين سيجارة وجرعتين من الفودكا، قبل أن يتحول سلوكه إلى تهديد مباشر للسلامة الجوية.
وبعد هبوط الطائرة بأمان، تلقى فريدريكس العلاج في المستشفى، وأكدت شركة خطوط ألاسكا الجوية أنها منعت الراكب من السفر مستقبلاً، مشيدة بمهنية الطاقم واعتذرت للركاب عن القلق الذي سببته الحادثة.
وأثارت الواقعة صدمة بين الركاب، مؤكدين أن تصرف شخص واحد يمكن أن يحوّل رحلة هادئة إلى تجربة مرعبة، بينما أثبت الطاقم قدرة عالية على السيطرة على الموقف والحفاظ على سلامة الجميع.

Passenger Kasyan William Fredericks began exhibiting strange behavior while using the restroom, then violently tried to open the aircraft door, causing panic among the passengers and crew. Witnesses confirmed that the door handle moved upward, prompting them to intervene to stop him, and although the pilot later explained that opening the door during flight is practically impossible due to air pressure, the tampering was enough to activate the emergency slide mechanism and cause significant damage.
Investigations revealed that the passenger was in an abnormal state, as he admitted to consuming alcohol and antidepressant medications, and felt a loss of memory from the past years, claiming to hear voices and strange things about methamphetamine leaking from the ventilation ducts. He also repeatedly requested to smoke a cigarette and have two shots of vodka before his behavior escalated into a direct threat to aviation safety.
After the plane landed safely, Fredericks received treatment at the hospital, and Alaska Airlines confirmed that they had banned the passenger from traveling in the future, praising the professionalism of the crew and apologizing to the passengers for the distress caused by the incident.
The incident shocked the passengers, who affirmed that the actions of one person can turn a peaceful flight into a terrifying experience, while the crew demonstrated a high ability to control the situation and ensure everyone's safety.
