عُثر على نونو إف. جي. لوريرو، البالغ من العمر 47 عاماً، مصاباً بطلقات نارية داخل منزله في ضاحية بروكلين الهادئة، في مشهد يناقض تماماً صورة المكان المعروف بالهدوء والأمان.
من قاعات MIT إلى سرير المستشفى
نُقل الأستاذ الجامعي إلى المستشفى ليل الإثنين في محاولة لإنقاذ حياته، لكنه فارق الحياة صباح الثلاثاء، وفق ما أعلنه مكتب المدعي العام لمنطقة نورفولك، لتتحول الواقعة من حادثة إطلاق نار إلى جريمة قتل مكتملة الأركان.
تحقيقات مفتوحة
وأوضحت السلطات أنها تحقق في ما إذا كانت وفاة لوريرو مرتبطة بحادث إطلاق النار في جامعة براون خلال عطلة نهاية الأسبوع، لكن مسؤولاً كبيراً في إنفاذ القانون أفاد لشبكة «إي بي سي نيوز» بأنه لا يوجد ما يشير حالياً إلى وجود صلة بين الحالتين.
وكان لوريرو عضو هيئة تدريس في أقسام العلوم والهندسة النووية والفيزياء، ومدير مركز علوم البلازما والاندماج وُلد في البرتغال، وانضم إلى هيئة التدريس بالمعهد في 2016، حيث اشتهر كباحث مبدع، وإداري موهوب، ومرشد متحمس، بحسب ما صرحت به رئيسة المعهد سالي كورنبلث.

The university professor was taken to the hospital on Monday night in an attempt to save his life, but he passed away on Tuesday morning, according to the Norfolk District Attorney's Office, turning the incident from a shooting into a fully-fledged murder.
Open Investigations
The authorities clarified that they are investigating whether Loureiro's death is related to a shooting incident at Brown University over the weekend, but a senior law enforcement official told ABC News that there is currently no indication of a connection between the two cases.
Loureiro was a faculty member in the departments of nuclear science and engineering and physics, and the director of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center. Born in Portugal, he joined the institute's faculty in 2016, where he was known as an innovative researcher, a talented administrator, and an enthusiastic mentor, according to the institute's president, Sally Kornbluth.
