شهدت بريطانيا حادثة مروعة أثارت الرأي العام، بعد أن قضت محكمة بسجن دانيال كوك (39 عامًا) مدى الحياة، إثر قتله والدته إيلين كوك (72 عامًا) بـ30 طعنة في حادثة صادمة. المثير أن الجريمة ارتكبها تحت تأثير هلاوس ذهانية جعلته يعتقد أن والدته «ساحرة»، ما دفع المحكمة لتطبيق «أمر هجين» يجمع بين العلاج الإلزامي في مستشفى نفسي والسجن عند استقرار حالته.
الجريمة وقعت في 11 مايو داخل منزل الأسرة في ليتلثورب قرب ليستر، خلال عشاء عائلي، حيث تبع الابن والدته إلى المطبخ وشنّ اعتداءً وحشيًا، بينما شاهد الزوج المصدوم المشهد المرعب.
ووفقًا للمحكمة، كان المشهد صادمًا، حيث كان الابن يقف فوق والدته ممسكًا بسكين مغطاة بالدماء، في حين كانت تحاول الصراخ والهروب دون جدوى.

وكشفت التحقيقات أن المراهق يعاني من اضطرابات عقلية شديدة، سبق أن نُقل على إثرها إلى وحدة نفسية متخصصة، كما كان قد هدّد والدته سابقًا. وأعربت شقيقاته عن خوفهن الشديد، مؤكّدات أن شقيقهن يشكل «خطرًا حقيقيًا» إذا أُفرج عنه، وأن والدته كانت تعيش تحت ظل رعب دائم.
