São Paulo's Guarulhos International Airport experienced a significant alert last night (Thursday) after a sudden fire broke out in one of the baggage handling equipment while passengers were boarding an Airbus A320, necessitating their immediate evacuation before the flight to Porto Alegre took off.
According to the Brazilian website "Dopofu," flames erupted from a baggage transport vehicle while it was loading the aircraft, and the security team quickly noticed the rising smoke, prompting emergency protocols to be activated within minutes.
Footage shared on social media showed smoke and flames rising beneath the aircraft, while airport staff attempted to control the fire using handheld extinguishers, and passengers were evacuated via the jet bridge and emergency slides with the assistance of the flight crew and trained security teams.
In an official statement, the airline confirmed that the fire was limited and originated from ground equipment belonging to an external company responsible for loading the baggage, emphasizing that all passengers exited safely with no injuries reported.
Despite the fire being brought under control, some passengers expressed that they experienced moments of chaos and anxiety, while cameras documented firefighters moving the burning vehicle away from the aircraft, with soot marks visible on the lower part of the aircraft's body.
