تحولت أجواء الاحتفال بعيد الشكر في ولاية ويسكونسن الأمريكية إلى مأساة بعد أن فقدت الأم جوردان فياسبي أطفالها الثلاثة إثر اندلاع حريق داخل شقة والدهم، في حادثة قلبت حياة العائلة رأساً على عقب.
وقالت الأم لوسائل الإعلام إنها قضت ساعات الصباح مع أطفالها رايلي (عشر سنوات)، كونور (تسع سنوات)، وألينا (سبع سنوات)، قبل أن توصلهم إلى منزل والدهم حسب ترتيبات الحضانة المشتركة. وبعد ساعات قليلة، اندلع الحريق، لتتلقى الأم نبأ وفاة صغارها الثلاثة.
وأكدت السلطات أن رايلي وكونور لقيا حتفهما فور اندلاع الحريق، فيما نُقلت ألينا إلى المستشفى جواً لكنها فارقت الحياة لاحقاً متأثرة بإصابتها. أما والد الأطفال فقد نجا من الحريق بعد تعرضه للاختناق نتيجة الدخان، وتلقى العلاج قبل خروجه من المستشفى.
