شنت السلطات الأمنية في هونغ كونغ حملة اعتقالات طالت 13 شخصا، على خلفية أسوأ كارثة حريق تشهدها هونغ كونغ منذ عقود، وتزامنا مع استمرار الفرق الإنقاذية في تمشيط أنقاض سبعة أبراج محترقة ضمن مجمع «وانغ فوك كورت» في حي تاي بو الشمالي.
ووصل عدد ضحايا الحريق المروع الذي شهدته هونغ كونغ إلى 151 قتيلاً -وفقاً لآخر التحديثات الرسمية اليوم- مع 30 شخصاً ما زالوا مفقودين، حيث حوصر عشرات السكان داخل شققهم أثناء محاولتهم اليائسة للهروب من اللهب المتوحش.
كارثة إنشائية
وكشفت التحقيقات الأولية عن إهمال فادح من شركات التجديدات، حيث فشلت سبعة من 20 عينة أخذت من الشباك الواقي في الامتثال لمعايير السلامة من الحريق، حيث استُخدمت مواد رخيصة اشتريت بعد إعصار صيفي بـ54 دولار هونغ كونغ للرول، بدلاً من المواد المعتمدة.
وأعلنت لجنة مكافحة الفساد المستقلة عن اعتقال 13 شخصاً – بما في ذلك مديرو شركات هندسية ومقاولو هيكل خشبي – بتهمة القتل غير العمد والفساد، مع استمرار التحقيق في استخدام مواد غير آمنة وتلاعب في التراخيص.
أسوأ حريق
وشهد مجمع «وانغ فوك كورت»، الذي بني في الثمانينيات كجزء من برنامج نظام الملكية السكنية الحكومي، ويضم ثمانية أبراج شاهقة تضم نحو 4600 نسمة، معظمهم من الطبقة الوسطى والعمال، حريق هائل سرعان ما امتد إلى سبعة أبراج مجاورة بسبب الشباك الواقي القابل للاشتعال الذي كان يغطي الهيكل الخشبي لأعمال التجديدات الجارية.
وأفادت التقارير الرسمية بأن إنذارات الحريق في جميع الأبراج الثمانية كانت معطلة بسبب أعمال التجديد، وأن السكان حاولوا الفرار عبر السلالم والأسطح لكنهم واجهوا جدراناً من اللهب والدخان.
وعثر على جثث بعض الضحايا داخل شققهم، بينما آخرون سقطوا أثناء محاولة القفز من النوافذ، كما أسفر الحريق عن مقتل إطفائي واحد وإصابة 12 آخرين، إضافة إلى خمسة عمال بناء، وفي اليومين الماضيين، أجرت السلطات 16 تفتيشاً للموقع، لكن مسؤولاً حكومياً أقر بأن بعض الجثث قد لا تُعثر عليها أبداً بسبب الدمار الشامل.

The number of victims from the horrific fire that occurred in Hong Kong has reached 151 dead - according to the latest official updates today - with 30 people still missing, as dozens of residents were trapped inside their apartments while desperately trying to escape the raging flames.
Construction Disaster
Preliminary investigations revealed gross negligence by renovation companies, as seven out of 20 samples taken from the protective window failed to meet fire safety standards, with cheap materials purchased after a summer typhoon at 54 Hong Kong dollars per roll, instead of the approved materials.
The Independent Commission Against Corruption announced the arrest of 13 individuals – including engineering company directors and wooden structure contractors – on charges of manslaughter and corruption, while investigations continue into the use of unsafe materials and manipulation of licenses.
Worst Fire
The "Wang Fuk Court" complex, built in the 1980s as part of the government housing ownership system, consists of eight high-rise towers housing about 4,600 residents, most of whom are from the middle class and laborers. It experienced a massive fire that quickly spread to seven neighboring towers due to the flammable protective window covering the wooden structure of the ongoing renovations.
Official reports indicated that the fire alarms in all eight towers were disabled due to renovation work, and residents attempted to escape via stairs and rooftops but faced walls of flames and smoke.
Some victims' bodies were found inside their apartments, while others fell while trying to jump from windows. The fire also resulted in the death of one firefighter and injuries to 12 others, in addition to five construction workers. In the past two days, authorities conducted 16 site inspections, but a government official acknowledged that some bodies may never be found due to the extensive destruction.
