في خطوة جريئة نحو مستقبل خالٍ من الدخان، فرضت جزر المالديف حظرًا شاملًا على التدخين لمن وُلدوا بعد يناير 2007، ليصبح هذا الجيل الأول في تاريخ البلاد الذي يمنع تماما من شراء أو استخدام أو بيع منتجات التبغ.
وأضافت الوزارة أن هذه الخطوة التي أطلقها الرئيس محمد معز في وقت سابق من هذا العام والتي تدخل حيز التنفيذ في الأول من نوفمبر، ستحمي الصحة العامة وتشجع على نشوء جيل خال من التبغ.
وأضافت «بموجب هذا القرار الجديد، يحظر على الأفراد المولودين في الأول من يناير 2007 أو بعده شراء أو استخدام أو بيع منتجات التبغ داخل جزر المالديف».
ويطبق الحظر على مختلف أنواع التبغ، وهو يفرض على تجار التجزئة التحقق من العمر قبل البيع.
ويطبق هذا الإجراء أيضا على زوار هذه الدولة التي تضم 1191 جزيرة مرجانية صغيرة متناثرة على بعد نحو 800 كيلومتر عن خط الاستواء، وتشتهر باجتذابها السياح الميسورين.
وأكدت الوزارة أنها تبقي أيضا على حظر شامل على استيراد وبيع وتوزيع وحيازة واستخدام السجائر الإلكترونية والمنتجات المرتبطة بها، ويُطبق ذلك على جميع الأفراد بغض النظر عن أعمارهم.
ويعاقب بغرامة قدرها 50 ألف روفيا (3200 دولار) كل من يبيع منتجات التبغ للقاصرين، بينما تفرض غرامة قدرها 5000 روفيا (320 دولارا) على استخدام أجهزة التدخين الإلكتروني.
لا يزال حظر مماثل مقترح في بريطانيا قيد الدراسة، بينما ألغته نيوزيلندا - أول دولة تسن قانونا كهذا ضد التدخين في نوفمبر 2023، بعد أقل من عام من إصداره.
In a bold step towards a smoke-free future, the Maldives has imposed a comprehensive ban on smoking for those born after January 2007, making this the first generation in the country's history that is completely prohibited from purchasing, using, or selling tobacco products.
The ministry added that this initiative, launched by President Mohamed Muiz earlier this year and set to take effect on November 1, will protect public health and encourage the emergence of a tobacco-free generation.
It stated, "Under this new decision, individuals born on or after January 1, 2007, are prohibited from purchasing, using, or selling tobacco products within the Maldives."
The ban applies to various types of tobacco and requires retailers to verify age before selling.
This measure also applies to visitors to this country, which consists of 1,191 small coral islands scattered about 800 kilometers from the equator and is known for attracting affluent tourists.
The ministry confirmed that it also maintains a comprehensive ban on the import, sale, distribution, possession, and use of electronic cigarettes and related products, which applies to all individuals regardless of age.
A fine of 50,000 Rufiyaa (3,200 USD) is imposed on anyone who sells tobacco products to minors, while a fine of 5,000 Rufiyaa (320 USD) is imposed for using electronic smoking devices.
A similar proposed ban in the UK is still under consideration, while New Zealand has repealed it - becoming the first country to enact such a law against smoking in November 2023, less than a year after its issuance.
