أعلنت السلطات الفيدرالية اليوم اتهام 19 رجلاً بتوجيه شبكة مخدرات متطورة غمرت حديقة واشنطن سكوير بملايين الجرعات من الفنتانيل والهيروين والكراك كوكايين، مما أدى إلى وفاة اثنتين على الأقل، وذلك في خطوة دراماتيكية كشفت عن وجه مظلم لأيقونة نيويورك الشهيرة.
ووصفت الاتهامات، التي فُكت عنها السرية في محكمة مقاطعة مانهاتن الاتحادية، الحديقة الأمريكية الشهيرة كـ«سوق مفتوحة على مدار السنة» لمدة خمس سنوات، حيث أصبحت الإبر والحقائب الملونة رموزًا للخطر اليومي.
كانت الشبكة تعمل كتعاون إجرامي منظم، يضم فرعًا من عصابة «البلدز»، حيث كان العديد من التجار عملاء أنفسهم، وفريق يقوده جون ليفيغني، البالغ من العمر 50 عامًا، الذي يُعتبر «الأب الروحي» لتجارة المخدرات في الحديقة منذ ربع قرن.
وتعتبر حديقة واشنطن سكوير في نيويورك رمزا تاريخيا شهيرا بقوسها الروماني الكلاسيكي، بثلاث ملاهٍ أطفال، وطاولات الشطرنج، وهي مكان يجمع بين السياح والفنانين والسكان المحليين، ومع ذلك، تحولت الحديقة خلال السنوات الخمس الماضية إلى مركز لتجارة المخدرات المفتوحة، حيث سجلت الشرطة والطوارئ أكثر من 65 حالة إفراط في جرعات مخدرات، مع انتشار الإبر والحقائب المستخدمة.

بدأت الكارثة الإنسانية في يونيو 2024، عندما اشترى شاب يبلغ 18 عامًا من كولورادو، جاء إلى نيويورك لتدريب مسرحي مرموق بعد تخرجه من الثانوية، مخدرات من أحد البائعين في الحديقة، واستخدم الشابان بعض الجرعات معًا، ليُكتشف الشاب ميتًا في شقة مانهاتن اليوم التالي، 4 يونيو، مع بقايا أكياس أرجوانية مليئة بالفنتانيل والهيروين على الطاولة.
وأوضحت التحقيقات أن الضحية الثانية، رجل مشرد يبلغ 43 عامًا عاش في الحديقة لسنوات، فُوجئ به ميتًا على الرصيف في 24 نوفمبر 2024، بجانب إبرة وحقائب كراك تحمل علامات الشبكة.
وكشفت التحقيقات أن الـ19 متهمين، جميعهم رجال، لديهم سجل إجرامي جماعي يتجاوز 80 اعتقالًا متعلقًا بالمخدرات منذ 2020، ولم يتم الكشف عن أسماء معظمهم، لكن الاتهامات تشمل التواطؤ في توزيع مخدرات أدى إلى الوفاة.
وأضاف المدعون أنه «لولا مجموعات الدعم التي توفر الناركان للمستخدمين، لكانت هناك المزيد من الوفيات»، مشيدين بدور المنظمات غير الحكومية في منع كارثة أكبر، حيث كشف التحقيق، الذي استمر أشهرًا، عن آليات الشبكة الداخلية، بما في ذلك المديرين الذين يعملون في نوبات ونظام الإشارات لتجنب الشرطة.
Federal authorities announced today the indictment of 19 men for running an advanced drug network that flooded Washington Square Park with millions of doses of fentanyl, heroin, and crack cocaine, resulting in at least two deaths, in a dramatic move that revealed a dark side to the famous New York icon.
The charges, which were unsealed in federal Manhattan District Court, described the iconic American park as a "year-round open-air market" for five years, where needles and colorful bags became symbols of daily danger.
The network operated as an organized criminal collaboration, featuring a branch of the "Bloods" gang, where many of the dealers were their own customers, and a team led by 50-year-old John Leveghne, who is considered the "godfather" of the drug trade in the park for a quarter of a century.
Washington Square Park in New York is a famous historical symbol with its classical Roman arch, three children's playgrounds, and chess tables, serving as a gathering place for tourists, artists, and locals. However, over the past five years, the park has transformed into an open drug market, with police and emergency services recording more than 65 cases of drug overdoses, alongside the spread of used needles and bags.
Unwritten Agreement
According to investigations, the two parties avoided confrontation through an unwritten agreement: selling in different areas, such as nearby subway stations, setting different prices, and coordinating to warn members of police presence. The U.S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan stated in a memo, "They turned a public park into a drug battleground, resulting in countless tragedies," calling for the detention of all defendants before trial.
The humanitarian disaster began in June 2024, when an 18-year-old from Colorado, who came to New York for a prestigious theater training after graduating high school, bought drugs from one of the sellers in the park. The two young men used some doses together, and the young man was found dead in a Manhattan apartment the next day, June 4, with remnants of purple bags filled with fentanyl and heroin on the table.
Investigations revealed that the second victim, a 43-year-old homeless man who had lived in the park for years, was found dead on the sidewalk on November 24, 2024, next to a needle and crack bags bearing the network's markings.
Investigations uncovered that the 19 defendants, all men, have a collective criminal record exceeding 80 drug-related arrests since 2020. Most of their names were not disclosed, but the charges include conspiracy to distribute drugs that resulted in death.
Prosecutors added that "if it weren't for the support groups providing Narcan to users, there would have been more deaths," praising the role of non-governmental organizations in preventing a larger disaster, as the investigation, which lasted for months, revealed the network's internal mechanisms, including managers working in shifts and a signaling system to avoid police detection.
