U.S. President Donald Trump has made a new surprise announcement, revealing that he is currently working on arranging a meeting "very soon" between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump told reporters today (Wednesday): "A meeting will be arranged very soon, and I believe that a great deal of progress can be made" regarding diplomatic efforts to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.
This announcement comes at a time when the Trump administration is intensifying its diplomatic efforts to end the Russian-Ukrainian war, which has entered its fifth year. Zelensky announced on Sunday that a trilateral meeting between Kyiv, Washington, and Moscow will be held in November, aimed at resuming stalled peace talks. The Kremlin had previously announced that a meeting between the three countries is scheduled to take place in the UAE in November.

Putin has repeatedly refused to engage in direct talks with Zelensky, asserting that Moscow intends to control what remains of eastern Ukraine. Direct negotiations between Russians and Ukrainians took place in 2025, but did not lead to a resolution of the conflict, with both sides sticking to their terms. However, the Kremlin has so far ruled out any possibility of a meeting between Putin and Zelensky outside of Moscow.
Russia rejects any ceasefire before reaching an agreement on core issues, believing that a truce would allow Kyiv to rearm itself. The leaders of Finland and Norway conducted a phone call with the Russian president yesterday (Tuesday) for the first time since the war Russia launched against Ukraine in February 2022. The call, made by Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, comes in an attempt to influence the diplomatic course.
Støre stated that he and Stubb spoke with Putin for about 90 minutes, and then they spoke with the Ukrainian president. In a joint statement, they linked this initiative to the planned peace talks between Russian, Ukrainian, and American officials in Abu Dhabi next month, the first of its kind since last February. Stubb said in a statement, "The discussion was frank and objective. We are neighboring countries to Russia, and the outcomes of this war will have a direct impact on our security and the security of Europe as a whole. Ending the war requires direct talks." Western European leaders have largely avoided contacting Putin since the beginning of the war between Russia and Ukraine.
