تحوّلت رغبة امرأة بريطانية في إنقاص وزنها إلى كابوس مأساوي، بعدما لقيت حتفها إثر حصولها على حقنة تخسيس غير مرخصة من مركز تجميل محلي، في حادثة صدمت الرأي العام البريطاني وأعادت النقاش حول انتشار عقاقير التنحيف في السوق السوداء.
الضحية وتُدعى كارن ماكغونيغال (53 عامًا) من مدينة سالفورد في مانشستر الكبرى، كانت تمرّ بمرحلة نفسية صعبة بعد انفصالها عن شريكها، ما دفعها — بحسب عائلتها — إلى البحث عن حلول سريعة لاستعادة ثقتها بنفسها.
وبناءً على نصيحة من صديقاتها، لجأت إلى مركز تجميل صغير قدّم لها حقن تخسيس بسعر 20 جنيهًا إسترلينيًا للجرعة فقط، دون أي إشراف طبي أو ترخيص رسمي.
وبحسب رواية الأسرة لصحيفة «ذا صن» البريطانية، فقد تولّت عاملة تجميل مختصة بالأظافر حقنها بالمادة خلال دقائق معدودة داخل المركز.
وبعد أيام قليلة، بدأت كارن تشعر بآلام حادة في المعدة وصعوبة في التنفس، قبل أن يتحول لون وجهها إلى الأرجواني، ما استدعى نقلها على وجه السرعة إلى المستشفى.
دخلت السيدة البريطانية في غيبوبة داخل وحدة العناية المركزة، وأبلغ الأطباء عائلتها بعد يومين أن حالتها «ميؤوس منها»، لتفارق الحياة وهي محاطة بأقاربها.
وكشفت التحاليل أن ما حُقنت به كارن لم يكن العقار المعلن عنه «مونغارو»، بل دواء آخر هو «سيماغلوتايد»، وهو علاج فعّال في إنقاص الوزن، لكنه يُصرف فقط بوصفة طبية وتحت إشراف متخصصين صحيين نظرًا لحساسية جرعاته وتأثيراته الجانبية الخطيرة.
وقالت ابنتاها إن والدتهما كانت ضحية للإعلانات المضللة والأسعار المغرية، مطالبتين السلطات بـتشديد الرقابة على بيع هذه العقاقير غير القانونية التي تُروّج عبر الإنترنت ومراكز التجميل.
وأكدت شرطة مانشستر الكبرى توقيف شخصين على خلفية الواقعة، أحدهما بتهمة القتل غير العمد وإعطاء مادة مؤذية، والآخر بتهمة تزويد مواد خاضعة للرقابة، فيما لا تزال التحقيقات جارية لتحديد المسؤوليات الكاملة.

The victim, named Karen McGonigal (53 years old) from Salford in Greater Manchester, was going through a difficult emotional phase after separating from her partner, which led her—according to her family—to seek quick solutions to regain her self-confidence.
Based on advice from her friends, she turned to a small beauty center that offered her weight loss injections for just £20 per dose, without any medical supervision or official licensing.
According to the family's account to the British newspaper "The Sun," a nail technician administered the injection to her within a few minutes inside the center.
After a few days, Karen began to experience severe stomach pains and difficulty breathing, before her face turned purple, prompting her to be rushed to the hospital.
The British woman fell into a coma in the intensive care unit, and doctors informed her family after two days that her condition was "hopeless," and she passed away surrounded by her relatives.
Tests revealed that what Karen was injected with was not the advertised drug "Monjaro," but another medication called "Semaglutide," which is an effective weight loss treatment but is only prescribed with a doctor's prescription and under the supervision of health specialists due to the sensitivity of its doses and its dangerous side effects.
Her daughters stated that their mother was a victim of misleading advertisements and enticing prices, calling on authorities to tighten regulations on the sale of these illegal drugs that are promoted online and through beauty centers.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed the arrest of two individuals in connection with the incident, one on charges of involuntary manslaughter and administering a harmful substance, and the other for supplying controlled substances, while investigations are still ongoing to determine full responsibilities.
