وتأتي التسوية بعد صفقة ترخيص ضخمة بقيمة 2.7 مليار دولار أبرمتها قوقل مع Character.AI عام 2024، والتي أعادت مؤسسي المنصة إلى الشركة. وأكدت المنصة أنها ستوقف إمكانية استخدام الروبوتات للأطفال دون 18 عاماً، في خطوة لتفادي المزيد من الأضرار.
ويثير هذا الاتفاق تساؤلات واسعة حول مسؤولية شركات الذكاء الاصطناعي عن حماية الأطفال، ومدى قدرة القانون على مواكبة التطورات الرقمية التي قد تهدد براءة الصغار.
In a dramatic move aimed at ending noisy legal disputes, Google and Character.AI announced a preliminary settlement with the families of minors harmed by chatbots, after one of these bots led to the suicide of a 14-year-old teenager from Florida. The settlement includes similar lawsuits in Florida, Colorado, New York, and Texas, but it requires court approval to become official.
The teenager, who had become emotionally dependent on a bot inspired by the series "Game of Thrones" on the Character.AI platform, raised concerns among his family before the tragedy, prompting the families to file lawsuits accusing the platform and Google of negligence.
The settlement comes after a massive licensing deal worth $2.7 billion that Google struck with Character.AI in 2024, which brought the platform's founders back to the company. The platform confirmed that it would stop allowing the use of bots for children under 18, in a move to prevent further harm.
This agreement raises widespread questions about the responsibility of artificial intelligence companies to protect children, and the extent to which the law can keep pace with digital developments that may threaten the innocence of minors.
