تشهد الكنيسة الأنغليكانية في أمريكا الشمالية عاصفة غير مسبوقة من الاتهامات التي طالت أعلى هرمها الديني، بعد أن وُجهت إلى كبير الأساقفة مزاعم تتعلق بـ«سوء سلوك جنسي» و«استغلال للسلطة»، في قضية تهدد بتقويض مصداقية المؤسسة الدينية التي تشكلت أصلاً كرد فعل محافظ على قرارات الكنيسة الأسقفية الأمريكية قبل سنوات.
ووفقاً لتقرير صحيفة واشنطن بوست، فقد أدلى عدد من الكهنة والموظفين السابقين بشهادات مكتوبة ضمن ما يُعرف بـ«عرض القضية» ضد الأسقف، تضمنت تفاصيل مثيرة عن محاولات تقبيل غير مرغوب فيها، ومدفوعات مالية مثيرة للريبة، وسلوكيات اعتُبرت «انتهاكاً للثقة والسلطة الكنسية».
ولم تتوقف القضية عند تلك الاتهامات، إذ وُجهت أيضاً انتقادات إلى أحد القادة البارزين في الكنيسة بدعوى التستر والسماح لرجال دين ذوي سوابق مشبوهة بتولي مناصب داخل المؤسسة، ما فاقم الغضب داخل المجتمع المسيحي وأثار موجة مطالبات بالتحقيق الشامل.
يأتي هذا الانفجار الداخلي في وقت تواجه فيه الكنيسة تحديات تتعلق بالشفافية والمحاسبة، خصوصاً أنها نشأت في الأصل على مبادئ «العودة إلى الأخلاق الإنجيلية الصارمة» عقب الانقسام التاريخي مع الكنيسة الأسقفية عام 2009 بسبب سيامة أول أسقف مثلي الجنس في الولايات المتحدة.
وحتى الآن، لم يصدر تعليق رسمي من الأسقف المتهم، فيما أعلنت مصادر كنسية أن لجنة خاصة بدأت دراسة الأدلة تمهيداً لاتخاذ الإجراءات المناسبة. أما داخل أروقة الكنيسة، فالتوتر يتصاعد، وسط تساؤلات عميقة حول مدى التزام القيادة بالمبادئ التي تأسست عليها.
The Anglican Church in North America is experiencing an unprecedented storm of accusations that have reached its highest religious hierarchy, after allegations of "sexual misconduct" and "abuse of power" were directed at the archbishop, in a case that threatens to undermine the credibility of the religious institution that was originally formed as a conservative reaction to the decisions of the Episcopal Church years ago.
According to a report by The Washington Post, several former clergy and staff provided written testimonies as part of what is known as the "case presentation" against the bishop, which included shocking details about unwanted kissing attempts, suspicious financial payments, and behaviors deemed as "a violation of trust and ecclesiastical authority."
The case did not stop at those accusations, as criticisms were also directed at one of the prominent church leaders for allegedly covering up and allowing clergy with questionable backgrounds to hold positions within the institution, exacerbating anger within the Christian community and sparking a wave of demands for a thorough investigation.
This internal explosion comes at a time when the church faces challenges related to transparency and accountability, especially since it was originally founded on the principles of "returning to strict evangelical morals" following the historic split with the Episcopal Church in 2009 over the ordination of the first openly gay bishop in the United States.
So far, no official comment has been issued by the accused bishop, while church sources announced that a special committee has begun examining the evidence in preparation for taking appropriate action. Meanwhile, tension is rising within the church's corridors, amid deep questions about the leadership's commitment to the principles upon which it was established.
