In a shocking scene that brought attention back to the rise of domestic violence in Egypt, the governorate of Port Said witnessed a horrific crime last night (Tuesday), when a young man threw his pregnant wife from the balcony of their second-floor apartment in the Al-Qaboty neighborhood after a trivial argument over a meal.

The victim, Dua Khalaf (21 years old), was preparing a dinner for her husband that he had requested (a tray of chicken with potatoes), but she replaced it with meat without adding rice, turning the dining table into a battleground that ended in an attempted murder.

According to her family, the husband exploded in anger and violently assaulted her before throwing her from the balcony in a hysterical moment, amidst the shock of neighbors who rushed to the sound of her painful screams.

The pregnant wife fell to the ground unconscious, and moments later, the locals discovered that her husband did not stop at his act; he went down to the street and carried her back to the apartment to continue beating and torturing her. Her mother said in a painful statement: "He pulled off her nails and beat her until her body was shattered! My daughter loved him, but she paid for that love with her life."

The victim was transferred to Al-Salam Hospital in Port Said in critical condition, as the medical report revealed serious fractures in her pelvis, vertebrae, and ribs, along with severe wounds to her face and hands, resulting from beating, biting, and nail removal. Doctors also confirmed that she was in the early stages of her pregnancy, but her critical health condition would not allow it to continue, indicating that she needed four delicate surgeries to save her life.

In an official statement, security authorities announced that they received a report from residents of the area about a woman falling from her balcony, prompting a police force to rush to the scene, where they arrested the husband (F.A.) before he could attempt to escape. Initial investigations indicated that he admitted to having a quarrel with his wife while preparing food, but he claimed that she "fell during the argument," while her family denied this narrative, asserting that he had been abusing her since their marriage a few weeks ago.

The incident sparked widespread outrage in Egyptian society and on social media, with calls for stricter penalties for perpetrators of domestic violence, especially those committed under the pretext of marital disputes.
