في مأساة جديدة هزّت أوغندا فجر اليوم (الأربعاء)، أعلنت الشرطة الأوغندية مقتل ما لا يقل عن 63 شخصًا في حادثة تصادم مروّعة بين عدة مركبات على طريق سريع في غرب البلاد، واصفة الحادثة بأنها من أكثر الكوارث المرورية دموية خلال السنوات الأخيرة.
ووفقًا لبيان المتحدث باسم الشرطة، وقعت الحادثة بعد منتصف الليل بالتوقيت المحلي على الطريق السريع المؤدي إلى مدينة جولو، وهي إحدى المدن الرئيسية في شمال البلاد، عندما حاول سائق إحدى الحافلات تجاوز شاحنة كبيرة كانت تسير أمامه بسرعة عالية، فاصطدم بها وجهاً لوجه، ما أدى إلى سلسلة اصطدامات متتابعة شملت أربع مركبات، بينها حافلتان مكتظتان بالركاب.
وأوضحت الشرطة أن الاصطدام كان عنيفًا لدرجة اشتعال الشاحنة، فيما هرع السكان المحليون والشرطة العسكرية إلى موقع الحادثة لمحاولة إخماد النيران وإخراج الجثث والمصابين من الموقع.
وأضاف البيان أن عشرات الجرحى جرى نقلهم إلى مستشفى جولو الإقليمي وبينهم حالات حرجة. وأشار التقرير الأمني إلى أن السرعة الزائدة والتجاوز الخاطئ هما السبب الرئيس للحادثة، لافتًا إلى أن الطريق السريع الرابط بين العاصمة كمبالا ومدينة جولو يشهد كثافة مرورية كبيرة ليلًا بسبب حركة الشاحنات التجارية بين شمال البلاد وجنوبها.
وتُعد حوادث الطرق في أوغندا من الظواهر المتكررة والمميتة، إذ تشير إحصاءات رسمية إلى أن البلاد تسجل آلاف الوفيات سنويًا بسبب سوء البنية التحتية للطُرق، وتهور بعض السائقين، وضيق الممرات التي لا تستوعب حركة المركبات المتزايدة.
وفي أعقاب الحادثة، أعلنت وزارة النقل فتح تحقيق عاجل للوقوف على ملابساتها، والتأكد من مدى مطابقة الشركات الناقلة لمعايير السلامة، بينما نُكست الأعلام في بعض المناطق الغربية حدادًا على الضحايا، وسط دعوات شعبية لتشديد الرقابة المرورية ووضع حلول جذرية لأزمة الطرق القاتلة في البلاد.
In a new tragedy that shook Uganda early this morning (Wednesday), the Ugandan police announced the death of at least 63 people in a horrific collision involving several vehicles on a highway in the west of the country, describing the incident as one of the deadliest traffic disasters in recent years.
According to a statement from the police spokesperson, the incident occurred shortly after midnight local time on the highway leading to the city of Gulu, one of the main cities in the north of the country, when the driver of one of the buses attempted to overtake a large truck that was moving ahead of him at high speed, colliding head-on with it, which led to a series of successive collisions involving four vehicles, including two buses packed with passengers.
The police clarified that the collision was so violent that it ignited the truck, while local residents and military police rushed to the scene to try to extinguish the flames and retrieve the bodies and injured from the site.
The statement added that dozens of injured people were transported to Gulu Regional Hospital, among them critical cases. The security report indicated that speeding and improper overtaking were the main causes of the incident, noting that the highway linking the capital Kampala and the city of Gulu experiences heavy traffic at night due to the movement of commercial trucks between the north and south of the country.
Traffic accidents in Uganda are a recurring and deadly phenomenon, as official statistics indicate that the country records thousands of deaths annually due to poor road infrastructure, reckless driving by some drivers, and narrow lanes that cannot accommodate the increasing vehicle traffic.
In the aftermath of the incident, the Ministry of Transport announced the opening of an urgent investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding it and to ensure that the transporting companies comply with safety standards, while flags were flown at half-mast in some western regions in mourning for the victims, amid public calls for stricter traffic enforcement and the implementation of radical solutions to the deadly road crisis in the country.
