According to statements from the Riau provincial police chief, General Asip Safrudin, the fire broke out in the ship's main gas tank during welding and maintenance work, leading to a rapidly spreading secondary explosion due to flammable gases stored on board. He stated, "The workers were still on the ship when the explosion occurred and could not escape quickly enough," adding that the victims were mostly local repair workers from Batam, which heavily relies on the maritime repair industry for its economy.
