Details of the Infections
The regional governor, Didi Mulyadi, confirmed that the poisoning cases were recorded in four areas, noting that 470 students were affected in West Bandung on Monday, followed by three additional waves of outbreaks yesterday (Wednesday) in the same area and in Sukabumi, affecting more than 580 additional children.
Pressure on Hospitals
Local hospitals in West Bandung were filled with the affected individuals, prompting the regional government to declare a health emergency to allocate an urgent budget to address the crisis.
Controversial Government Program
These incidents come just a week after 800 students were affected in West Java and Sulawesi. According to non-governmental organizations, the recurring incidents raise serious concerns about the safety standards and oversight in the free meals program launched by President Prabowo Subianto, which has expanded to include more than 20 million beneficiaries, with a goal of feeding 83 million people by the end of the year.
