منذ دخولها البرلمان البريطاني عام 2010، استطاعت شابانا محمود أن تفرض حضورها واحدةً من أبرز الوجوه الصاعدة داخل حزب العمل. واليوم، بعد مرور 15 عاماً على مسيرتها البرلمانية، وصلت إلى موقع تاريخي (أول امرأة مسلمة من أصول باكستانية تتولى وزارة الداخلية البريطانية).
إنجازات بارزة في وزارة العدل
خلال توليها وزارة العدل في يوليو 2024، أطلقت شابانا محمود برنامجاً استثنائيّاً للإفراج المبكر لمواجهة الاكتظاظ غير المسبوق في السجون البريطانية، وهو قرار شجاع أثار جدلاً واسعاً، لكنه عكس قدرتها على التعامل مع أزمات حساسة. كما دفعت نحو تسريع المحاكمات وتخفيف الضغط على النظام القضائي، ما منحها سمعة بأنها وزيرة "عملية" تركز على الحلول المباشرة.
مسيرة برلمانية لافتة

وُلدت شابانا محمود في برمنغهام عام 1980، لكنها قضت طفولتها المبكرة في مدينة الطائف بالسعودية حيث كان والدها يعمل مهندساً في مشروع لتحلية المياه. وبعد عودة العائلة، التحقت بجامعة أكسفورد وتخرجت فيها عام 2002 حاملة شهادة في القانون، ثم أكملت دورة المحاماة عام 2003 لتبدأ مسيرتها المهنية. هذه الخلفية المتنوعة جعلت قصتها مصدر إلهام لشرائح واسعة من أبناء الجاليات المسلمة والآسيوية في بريطانيا.
التحدي الأكبر.. وزارة الداخلية
اليوم، تجد شابانا محمود نفسها أمام حقيبة وزارية مليئة بالتحديات: من ملف الهجرة غير النظامية والحدود، إلى الأمن الداخلي، فضلاً عن العلاقة الحساسة مع الشرطة، إذ تتحمل الوزارة مسؤولية تأمين الموارد الكافية لقوات الشرطة من جهة، وضمان المساءلة والشفافية من جهة أخرى. نجاحها في هذا التوازن، إلى جانب قدرتها على إدارة الملفات الأمنية المعقدة، لن يحدد فقط مستقبلها السياسي، بل قد يفتح الباب أمامها لتكون واحدة من أبرز المرشحين لمناصب قيادية أكبر داخل حزب العمل وربما الحكومة البريطانية مستقبلاً.
