أعلنت سلسلة متاجر وولمارت الأمريكية سحب دفعات من الروبيان النيء المجمد، بعد تحذير من إدارة الغذاء والدواء الأمريكية (FDA) بشأن احتمال احتوائه على نظير إشعاعي من نوع السيزيوم-137.
وقالت الإدارة إن منتجات الروبيان (التي تحمل علامة «جريت فاليو» وبيعت في 13 ولاية أمريكية) قد تشكل مخاطر صحية في حال التعرض المزمن لمستويات منخفضة من المادة المشعة. وأشارت إلى أن التلوث اكتُشف في حاويات شحن وعينة مستوردة من إندونيسيا.
وطالبت السلطات المستهلكين الذين اشتروا هذه المنتجات بالتخلص منها فورًا، مؤكدة أن الإجراء احترازي.
من جانبه، أوضح الخبير في سلامة الغذاء بجامعة روتجرز دونالد شافنر أن المخاطر الصحية المحتملة «منخفضة للغاية». ولفت إلى أن السيزيوم-137 يُعد ناتجًا ثانويًا للتفاعلات النووية، ويمكن العثور على كميات ضئيلة منه طبيعيًا في التربة والهواء والغذاء حول العالم.
The American retail chain Walmart announced the recall of batches of frozen raw shrimp after a warning from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding the potential presence of a radioactive isotope, cesium-137.
The agency stated that the shrimp products (bearing the "Great Value" label and sold in 13 U.S. states) may pose health risks in the event of chronic exposure to low levels of the radioactive material. It noted that contamination was discovered in shipping containers and an imported sample from Indonesia.
Authorities urged consumers who purchased these products to dispose of them immediately, emphasizing that the action is precautionary.
For his part, food safety expert at Rutgers University, Donald Schaffner, clarified that the potential health risks are "extremely low." He pointed out that cesium-137 is a byproduct of nuclear reactions and can be found in trace amounts naturally in soil, air, and food around the world.
