سجلت جرائم السرقة من المتاجر في إنجلترا وويلز ارتفاعاً بنسبة 20% خلال العام المنتهي في مارس 2025، لتصل إلى أعلى مستوى لها منذ عقدين، وفقاً لبيانات رسمية نشرت، اليوم (الخميس).
وأفاد مكتب الإحصاءات الوطنية (ONS) بتسجيل 530.643 جريمة، وهو الرقم الأعلى منذ بدء ممارسات التسجيل الحالية للشرطة في 2003، مقارنة بـ444.022 جريمة في العام السابق، بزيادة سنوية بلغت 30%.
ويؤكد تجار التجزئة، بحسب وكالة «رويترز»، أن الوضع أسوأ بكثير، إذ لا يتم الإبلاغ عن ملايين الحوادث بسبب اعتقاد أصحاب المتاجر بعدم استجابة الشرطة أو ملاحقة المخالفين.
وتكلف السرقات القطاع مليارات الجنيهات، مما يرفع الأسعار على المستهلكين نتيجة تعويض الخسائر وزيادة تكاليف الأمن.
وتشير استطلاعات الجريمة السنوية لاتحاد التجزئة البريطاني (BRC) إلى وقوع أكثر من 20 مليون حادثة سرقة حتى أغسطس 2024، بتكلفة 2.2 مليار جنيه إسترليني (نحو 3 مليارات دولار).
ولم يحدد مكتب الإحصاءات أسباب الارتفاع، لكنه أشار إلى أن الاتجاه بدأ خلال ذروة جائحة كوفيد-19 في 2020. وتعهدت حكومة العمال البريطانية باتخاذ إجراءات أقوى لمعالجة الجرائم التجارية، بما في ذلك السرقة من المتاجر والسلوكيات المعادية للمجتمع.
وأثارت قضية السرقة والعنف ضد العاملين في المتاجر مخاوف كبرى الشركات مثل «تيسكو» و«كو-أوب»، إذ أعلنت الأخيرة خسائر بقيمة 80 مليون جنيه إسترليني في 2024، تمثل أكثر من نصف أرباحها التشغيلية المعدلة.
Shoplifting crimes in England and Wales recorded a 20% increase during the year ending in March 2025, reaching their highest level in two decades, according to official data published today (Thursday).
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported 530,643 crimes, the highest number since the current police recording practices began in 2003, compared to 444,022 crimes in the previous year, marking a 30% annual increase.
Retailers, according to Reuters, assert that the situation is much worse, as millions of incidents go unreported due to store owners believing that the police will not respond or pursue offenders.
Theft costs the sector billions of pounds, raising prices for consumers as a result of compensating for losses and increasing security costs.
Annual crime surveys by the British Retail Consortium (BRC) indicate that over 20 million theft incidents occurred by August 2024, costing £2.2 billion (around $3 billion).
The ONS did not specify the reasons for the increase but noted that the trend began during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The British Labour government has pledged to take stronger action to address commercial crimes, including shoplifting and anti-social behavior.
The issue of theft and violence against store workers has raised concerns for major companies like Tesco and Co-op, with the latter announcing losses of £80 million in 2024, representing more than half of its adjusted operating profits.
