طالبت جامعة هارفارد، اليوم (الإثنين)، قاضية فدرالية في بوسطن بإصدار أمر يلزم إدارة الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب باستعادة منح فيدرالية بقيمة 2.5 مليار دولار تم إلغاؤها، ووقف محاولات قطع تمويل الأبحاث عن الجامعة العريقة، بحسب وكالة «رويترز».
وتأتي الجلسة أمام القاضية أليسون بوروز في ظل تصاعد النزاع بين البيت الأبيض وهارفارد، التي واجهت ضغوطا إدارية بعد رفضها قائمة مطالب في أبريل تتعلق بتغييرات في الحوكمة، والتوظيف، وممارسات القبول.
وتؤكد الجامعة التي يقع مقرها في كامبريدج بولاية ماساتشوستس، أن مئات المشاريع البحثية، بما في ذلك أبحاث علاج السرطان، الأمراض المعدية، ومرض باركنسون، مهددة بالتوقف.
وأصبحت هارفارد، أقدم وأغنى جامعة في الولايات المتحدة، هدفا رئيسيا لحملة إدارة ترمب التي تستخدم التمويل الفيدرالي لفرض التغيير على الجامعات الأمريكية، التي يتهمها ترمب بالتأثر بالأيديولوجيات اليسارية الراديكالية والمعادية للسامية.
وقال المتحدث باسم البيت الأبيض، هاريسون فيلدز، إن موقف الإدارة واضح: منع معاداة السامية وسياسات التنوع والإنصاف من السيطرة على الحرم الجامعي، واحترام القانون، وحماية الحريات المدنية للطلاب.
ومنذ تولي ترمب منصبه في يناير، اتخذت الإدارة إجراءات ضد هارفارد، بما في ذلك إلغاء مئات المنح، ومنع الطلاب الدوليين من الالتحاق بالجامعة، وتهديد اعتمادها، إلى جانب فرض ضريبة فيدرالية بنسبة 8% على دخل هارفارد من صندوقها الوقفي البالغ 53 مليار دولار، ارتفاعا من 1.4%.
وأشار رئيس الجامعة، آلان غاربر، إلى أن هذه الإجراءات قد تكلف الجامعة ما يقرب من مليار دولار سنويا، ما يجبرها على تسريح موظفين وتجميد التوظيف.
وأكدت هارفارد أنها اتخذت خطوات لضمان بيئة ترحيبية للطلاب اليهود والإسرائيليين عقب حرب إسرائيل وحماس في أكتوبر 2023، لكنها ترى أن مطالب الإدارة تتجاوز معالجة معاداة السامية وتسعى بشكل غير قانوني للتحكم في الظروف الفكرية للجامعة.
في المحكمة، جادلت الإدارة بأن القاضية بوروز، التي عينها الرئيس الديمقراطي باراك أوباما، ليس لديها اختصاص للنظر في التحدي، وأن عقود المنح تنص على إمكانية إلغائها إذا لم تحقق أهداف السياسة الفيدرالية. ومع ذلك، أعربت الإدارة عن تفاؤلها بإمكانية التوصل إلى تسوية مع هارفارد.

Harvard University today (Monday) requested a federal judge in Boston to issue an order requiring President Donald Trump's administration to restore $2.5 billion in federal grants that were canceled and to stop attempts to cut research funding for the prestigious university, according to Reuters.
The hearing before Judge Allison Burroughs comes amid escalating tensions between the White House and Harvard, which has faced administrative pressure after rejecting a list of demands in April related to governance changes, hiring, and admissions practices.
The university, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, asserts that hundreds of research projects, including cancer research, infectious diseases, and Parkinson's disease, are at risk of being halted.
Harvard, the oldest and wealthiest university in the United States, has become a primary target of Trump's administration, which is using federal funding to impose changes on American universities that Trump accuses of being influenced by radical leftist and anti-Semitic ideologies.
White House spokesperson Harrison Fields stated that the administration's position is clear: to prevent anti-Semitism and diversity and equity policies from dominating the campus, to uphold the law, and to protect students' civil liberties.
Since Trump took office in January, the administration has taken actions against Harvard, including canceling hundreds of grants, preventing international students from enrolling at the university, threatening its accreditation, and imposing an 8% federal tax on Harvard's income from its $53 billion endowment, up from 1.4%.
University President Alan Garber noted that these actions could cost the university nearly $1 billion annually, forcing it to lay off staff and freeze hiring.
Harvard has confirmed that it has taken steps to ensure a welcoming environment for Jewish and Israeli students following the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023, but it believes that the administration's demands go beyond addressing anti-Semitism and are illegally seeking to control the intellectual conditions of the university.
In court, the administration argued that Judge Burroughs, appointed by Democratic President Barack Obama, lacks jurisdiction to consider the challenge, and that grant contracts stipulate they can be canceled if federal policy goals are not met. However, the administration expressed optimism about reaching a settlement with Harvard.
