قال حاكم ولاية تكساس جريج أبوت أمس (الجمعة) إنه أصدر إعلانًا بالكارثة بعد أن أدت الفيضانات الشديدة إلى مقتل 24 شخصًا على الأقل وفقدان أكثر من 20 آخرين في الولاية وفقاً لشبكة «سي إن إن» الأمريكية.
فيما قال الشريف لاري ليثا في مؤتمر صحفي مساء الجمعة إن الفيضانات الشديدة أسفرت عن مقتل 24 شخصا على الأقل في مقاطعة كير بولاية تكساس.
وأضاف ليثا:«هناك أيضًا حالة وفاة إضافية في مقاطعة كيندال، لكن لم يتضح على الفور ما إذا كانت مرتبطة بالفيضانات».
وشهدت ولاية تكساس الأمريكية، أمس (الجمعة)، فيضانات مفاجئة ومميتة اجتاحت مناطق وسط الولاية، خاصة في مقاطعة كير، بعد هطول أمطار غزيرة بلغت في بعض المناطق أكثر من 15 بوصة في ساعات قليلة، وهو ما يعادل أمطار صيف كامل.
وتسببت الأمطار الغزيرة في ارتفاع منسوب نهر غوادالوبي بشكل غير مسبوق، حيث سجل النهر ارتفاعاً بمقدار 22 قدماً في ثلاث ساعات فقط، ليصل إلى ثاني أعلى مستوى في تاريخه، متجاوزاً الفيضان الشهير عام 1987.
وأصدرت هيئة الأرصاد الجوية الوطنية الأمريكية، تحذيرات طارئة من الفيضانات المفاجئة في مقاطعات توم غرين، كير، وكيندال، واصفة الوضع بأنه «مهدد للحياة»، وأشارت الهيئة إلى أن موجة فيضانية «مميتة» تجتاح نهر غوادالوبي من سنتر بوينت إلى سيستر ديل، داعية السكان إلى مغادرة المناطق المنخفضة فوراً وتجنب السفر عبر الطرق المغمورة بالمياه.
وتسببت الفيضانات في أضرار جسيمة، حيث غمرت المياه المنازل والطرق، وجرفت مركبات ومعسكرات صيفية، بما في ذلك معسكر ميستيك للفتيات، حيث أُبلغ عن مفقودين، من بينهم أطفال.
و أعلنت السلطات المحلية في مقاطعة كير عن وقوع عدد غير مؤكد من الوفيات، مع استمرار عمليات البحث عن مفقودين، وأكدت شرطة مدينة كيرفيل أن فرق الإنقاذ تعمل على إجلاء العالقين على أسطح المنازل، بينما تم إغلاق العديد من الطرق وإقامة ملاجئ مؤقتة، مثل مركز وولمارت في كيرفيل، لإيواء النازحين.
وأرجعت هيئة الأرصاد الجوية هذه الأمطار الاستثنائية إلى بقايا العاصفة الاستوائية باري، التي شكلت ظروفاً مثالية لتساقط أمطار غزيرة على تربة جافة بسبب الجفاف الشديد الذي تعاني منه المنطقة، مما زاد من سرعة جريان المياه وحدة الفيضانات، وأشارت إلى أن ظاهرة الاحتباس الحراري تزيد من تكرار مثل هذه الأحداث الجوية المتطرفة.
وألغت مدينة كيرفيل احتفالات الرابع من يوليو بسبب الفيضانات، وحثت السكان على البقاء في منازلهم وتجنب السفر، كما أعلن حاكم ولاية تكساس بالإنابة، دان باتريك، عن عقد مؤتمر صحفي لتقديم تحديثات حول الوضع، بينما انضمت منظمات مدنية لجهود الإنقاذ.
وتشهد تكساس تاريخاً طويلاً من الفيضانات المدمرة، حيث سجلت أحداثاً كارثية مثل فيضان نهر غوادالوبي عام 1987، الذي أودى بحياة 10 مراهقين، وفيضانات عام 1921 في مقاطعة ويليامسون، التي تُعد الأكثر دموية في تاريخ الولاية بـ215 ضحية.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced yesterday (Friday) that he issued a disaster declaration after severe flooding led to the deaths of at least 24 people and the disappearance of more than 20 others in the state, according to the American network "CNN."
Meanwhile, Sheriff Larry Leitha stated at a press conference on Friday evening that the severe flooding resulted in the deaths of at least 24 people in Kerr County, Texas.
Leitha added, "There is also one additional death in Kendall County, but it was not immediately clear if it was related to the flooding."
The state of Texas witnessed sudden and deadly flooding yesterday (Friday) that swept through central areas, particularly in Kerr County, after heavy rains exceeded 15 inches in some areas within just a few hours, equivalent to a full summer's worth of rain.
The heavy rains caused the Guadalupe River to rise to unprecedented levels, with the river recording a rise of 22 feet in just three hours, reaching its second-highest level in history, surpassing the famous flood of 1987.
The National Weather Service issued emergency flash flood warnings for Tom Green, Kerr, and Kendall counties, describing the situation as "life-threatening," and indicated that a "deadly" flood wave was sweeping the Guadalupe River from Center Point to Sisterdale, urging residents to evacuate low-lying areas immediately and avoid traveling through flooded roads.
The flooding caused significant damage, as waters inundated homes and roads, sweeping away vehicles and summer camps, including the Mystic Camp for Girls, where missing persons were reported, including children.
Local authorities in Kerr County reported an uncertain number of fatalities, with search operations for missing persons ongoing, and the Kerrville Police confirmed that rescue teams were working to evacuate those trapped on rooftops, while many roads were closed and temporary shelters, such as the Walmart center in Kerrville, were established to accommodate the displaced.
The weather service attributed these exceptional rains to the remnants of Tropical Storm Barry, which created ideal conditions for heavy rainfall on dry soil due to the severe drought affecting the area, increasing the speed of water flow and the intensity of flooding. They noted that global warming is increasing the frequency of such extreme weather events.
Kerrville canceled its Fourth of July celebrations due to the flooding and urged residents to stay home and avoid travel. Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick announced a press conference to provide updates on the situation, while civil organizations joined the rescue efforts.
Texas has a long history of devastating floods, having recorded catastrophic events such as the Guadalupe River flood in 1987, which claimed the lives of 10 teenagers, and the 1921 floods in Williamson County, which are the deadliest in the state's history with 215 victims.
