سقطت كتلة ضخمة من الصخور والجليد من نهر جليدي على سفح أحد الجبال في جنوب سويسرا، (الأربعاء)، ما أدى إلى إطلاق سحب كثيفة من الغبار وتغطية قرية جبلية بالكامل تقريباً بطبقة من الطين.
وأظهر مقطع فيديو نُشر على مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي والتلفزيون السويسري لحظة الانهيار قرب بلدة بلاتن في وادي لوتشنتال، حيث غمرت كميات هائلة من الطين البني منازل ومبانٍ جزئياً.
وأعلنت الشرطة الإقليمية فقدان رجل يبلغ من العمر 64 عاما، مؤكدة أن عمليات البحث والإنقاذ مستمرة باستخدام طائرة مسيّرة مزودة بكاميرا حرارية.
وقال رئيس الأمن في منطقة فاليه الجنوبية ستيفان جانزر لقناة «كانال 9» السويسرية: «ما يمكنني قوله الآن هو أن نحو 90% من القرية مغطى أو مدمّر؛ إنها كارثة كبرى ضربت بلاتن». وأضاف جانزر: «هناك خطر من تفاقم الوضع»، مشيراً إلى أن الجيش تم استدعاؤه بعد ملاحظة تسارع في حركة النهر الجليدي.
وأوضحت الحكومة الإقليمية، في بيان، أن جزءاً كبيراً من نهر بيرش الجليدي الواقع فوق القرية قد انهار، ما تسبب في الانهيار الأرضي الذي دفن أيضاً مجرى نهر لونزا القريب، وسط مخاوف من فيضانات محتملة بسبب انسداد مجرى المياه خلف السدود.
ووصف وزير البيئة السويسري ألبرت روستي الحادثة بأنها «حدث استثنائي»، مؤكداً أن الحكومة ستتخذ خطوات عاجلة لمساعدة القرويين المتضررين.
وخلال الأيام الماضية، كانت السلطات قد أمرت بإجلاء نحو 300 شخص، إضافة إلى رؤوس الماشية كافة من القرية، تحسباً لانهيار كتلة جليدية تقدر مساحتها بـ1.5 مليون متر مكعب (52 مليون قدم مكعب).
A massive block of rock and ice fell from a glacier onto the slopes of a mountain in southern Switzerland on Wednesday, resulting in thick clouds of dust and nearly covering a mountain village with a layer of mud.
A video posted on social media and Swiss television showed the moment of the collapse near the town of Blatten in the Lötschental valley, where huge amounts of brown mud partially submerged homes and buildings.
The regional police announced the disappearance of a 64-year-old man, confirming that search and rescue operations are ongoing using a drone equipped with a thermal camera.
Stefan Ganzer, the head of security in the southern Valais region, told Swiss Channel "Canal 9": "What I can say now is that about 90% of the village is covered or destroyed; it is a major disaster that has struck Blatten." Ganzer added: "There is a risk of the situation worsening," noting that the army has been called in after observing an acceleration in the movement of the glacier.
The regional government clarified in a statement that a large part of the Birch glacier located above the village had collapsed, causing the landslide that also buried the nearby Lonza riverbed, amid fears of potential flooding due to water blockage behind the dams.
Swiss Environment Minister Albert Rösti described the incident as an "extraordinary event," confirming that the government will take urgent steps to assist the affected villagers.
In recent days, authorities had ordered the evacuation of about 300 people, as well as all livestock from the village, in anticipation of a potential collapse of an ice mass estimated to be 1.5 million cubic meters (52 million cubic feet).
