أُغلق مختبر تابع للحكومة الأمريكية يتعامل مع أخطر الأمراض في العالم، بسبب مخاوف تتعلق بالسلامة، بعد مشاجرة بين عالِمين كانا مرتبطين عاطفياً.
وكشف مصدر من وزارة الصحة والخدمات الإنسانية (HHS)، طلب عدم الكشف عن هويته، أن أحد الباحثين قام بثقب معدات الحماية الخاصة بالآخر خلال مشاجرة حادة بينهما.
ووضعت مديرة المختبر الدكتورة كوني شمالجون في إجازة إدارية بعد اتهامها بالتقاعس عن إبلاغ المسؤولين الآخرين بالحادثة.
ويعمل مختبر البحث المتكامل الممول من دافعي الضرائب في فريدريك، ميريلاند، مع فايروسات قاتلة مثل الإيبولا، وحمى لاسا.
وعلى رغم أن المختبر يضم فايروسات فتاكة مهددة للحياة البشرية، شهد حادثة غريبة عندما قام أحد العلماء – خلال نوبة غضب – بإتلاف معدات الحماية الخاصة بزميلته التي كانت على علاقة عاطفية معه سابقاً. وهذه الحماقة الشخصية كشفت ثغرة خطيرة في نظام الأمن الحيوي لهذه المنشآت الحساسة.
