An economic report published by the "Enterprise AM" platform today (Thursday) revealed that more than 40 local and international investors are interested in investing in Saudi clubs as of last June, amid shifts in their financial evaluations and investors' demands for lower acquisition prices and stricter governance and financial scrutiny requirements, while negotiations continue regarding the transfer of ownership of several clubs to the private sector.
The report quoted Dr. Christos Anagnostopoulos, a professor of sports management at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, stating that the number of interested investors has exceeded 40, based on information obtained from a senior official in the Ministry of Sports, pointing out the ongoing investment interest in Saudi football, with buyers requesting price discounts.
The report discussed negotiations of an investment consortium led by the American company "RedBird Capital Partners" with the Public Investment Fund to acquire Al-Nassr Club, based on information indicating a potential valuation of the club at around 1.4 billion riyals, as part of the movements related to the program for the privatization of Saudi clubs.
Anagnostopoulos clarified that the sale of clubs typically takes between 8 to 10 months, involving financial evaluation, due diligence, negotiations, and contractual procedures.
Sports finance professor Rob Wilson confirmed that investors focus on brand strength, fan base size, sponsorship contracts, broadcasting rights, stadium infrastructure, financial commitments, and governance levels when determining the investment value of clubs.
He noted that investors differentiate between clubs capable of achieving sustainable commercial growth and those that rely heavily on external financing, while the sector continues to attract investment institutions and family offices.
Anagnostopoulos reported that estimates indicate a decrease in the fixed salary bill for Saudi league clubs by about 13% during the current season, coinciding with owners' moves towards financial discipline and investment in developing young players and enhancing commercial returns.
The report linked the growth expectations of club brands to the Kingdom hosting the 2034 World Cup, which provides long-term economic and marketing opportunities.
The experts emphasized the importance of publishing audited financial statements, implementing spending controls, examining the eligibility of owners and management, and enhancing transparency to ensure the sustainability of private investments in Saudi football.
