بدأت المباراة بوتيرة عالية منذ دقائقها الأولى، وافتتح أتلتيكو التسجيل عبر روبين لو نورماند (د:14)، ليرد عليه الريال بهدفي كيليان مبابي (د:25) وأردا غولر (د:37)، قبل أن يسجل ألكسندر سورلوث الهدف الثاني لفريقه (د:45+2)، لينتهي الشوط الأول بالتعادل (2-2).
وفي الشوط الثاني واصل أتلتيكو تألقه وتمكن جوليان ألفاريز من تسجيل هدفين متتاليين (د:52 و64) ليحسم اللقاء عملياً، ليختتم البديل أنطوان غريزمان الخماسية (د:90+4) التاريخية.
هذا الفوز التاريخي رفع رصيد أتلتيكو مدريد إلى 12 نقطة من 7 مباريات، بينما تجمد رصيد المتصدر ريال مدريد عند 18 نقطة، ما وضع صدارته في خطر حقيقي، خصوصاً مع اقتراب برشلونة الذي يمتلك 16 نقطة من 6 مباريات ويستعد لمواجهة ريال سوسيداد غداً.
وسيكون برشلونة أمام فرصة ذهبية للانقضاض على الصدارة إذا ما نجح في الفوز غداً على ريال سوسيداد، إذ سيقفز حينها للنقطة 19، ما يزيد من التنافس بين فرق الدوري منذ بدايته.
