The Italian and Albanian authorities have revealed one of the largest drug trafficking networks dismantled in Europe in recent years, following the exposure of an organized Albanian gang involved in smuggling around 50 tons of cocaine from Latin America to the European continent between 2019 and 2021, with an estimated market value of up to 10 billion euros.
The Italian financial police announced yesterday (Wednesday) that joint investigations with Albanian authorities uncovered a large-scale criminal network that successfully transported massive quantities of cocaine through complex smuggling routes originating from South American countries before reaching European markets.
According to Italian authorities, just one ton of cocaine was capable of generating revenues of no less than 200 million euros within the European market, making the total value of the smuggled shipments among the largest recorded in the history of drug enforcement on the continent.
In a notable development, the Special Prosecutor's Office for the Fight Against Corruption and Organized Crime in Albania issued arrest warrants for 10 individuals suspected of belonging to the criminal group led by Shpetim Alio, also known as "Salvador Alio," who is believed to have played a pivotal role in managing smuggling operations and money laundering.
The prosecution confirmed that investigations revealed the conversion of drug trafficking revenues into massive investments within Albania, including construction projects, luxury villas, hotels, tourist resorts, coastal lands, commercial companies, and various properties, in an attempt to legitimize the funds obtained from illegal activities.
During the security operation, authorities seized 491 financial assets valued at approximately 150 million euros, including 121 properties and 209 bank accounts, in a move aimed at drying up the funding sources of the criminal network.
The Albanian police also carried out 23 simultaneous raids in different regions of the country, resulting in the arrest of one suspect, while information indicates the presence of two others within Albania, and it is believed that the remaining wanted individuals are residing outside the country.
This operation is part of escalating European efforts to combat cocaine trafficking networks that have increasingly relied on organized crime groups in the Balkan region, particularly Albanian gangs that have strengthened their influence in recent years within cross-border drug trafficking networks.
European security reports indicate that Albanian criminal groups have succeeded in the past decade in building direct relationships with cocaine producers in Latin America, granting them a growing role in the European drug market, which is considered one of the largest consumer markets for cocaine in the world.
Investigators believe that this case reveals not only the scale of the illicit drug trade but also the ability of organized crime networks to exploit legitimate economic sectors, such as real estate, tourism, and construction, to launder billions of euros of illegal money and reinject it into the formal economy.
