بدأ الاتحاد مشوار الدفاع عن لقبه بطلاً لأغلى الكؤوس بالفوز على مضيفه الوحدة بهدف دون مقابل، في اللقاء الذي جمع بينهما على استاد مدينة الملك عبدالعزيز الرياضية بالشرائع، ضمن لقاءات دور الـ32 من مسابقة كأس خادم الحرمين الشريفين.
دخل الاتحاد هذا اللقاء بعد أن اعتمد مدربه لوران بلان على عدد كبير من الأسماء البديلة إضافة لعودة الحارس الصربي رايكوفيتش لتهيئته لمواجهة النصر يوم الجمعة في «كلاسيكو» مرتقب، وشهد اللقاء سيطرة اتحادية مبكرة وانطلق معاذ فقيهي الكرة من الجهة اليسرى ولعب كرة عرضية ترتطم بيد المدافع عبدالمحسن فلاتة ليحتسبها الحكم أحمد الرميخاني ركلة جزاء تقدم لها صالح الشهري، وسددها بنجاح على يسار الحارس عبدالله العويشير هدفاً للاتحاد (د:9)، وكاد الشهري يضيف الهدف الثاني بعد مجهود فردي رائع من عبدالرحمن العبود الذي توغل من جهة اليسار ودخل منطقة الجزاء ولعبها أرضية للشهري المواجه للمرمى، لكنه سددها فوق العارضة، وبالطريقة ذاتها من الجهة اليمنى لعب العبود كرة أرضية للشهري الذي سيطر على الكرة وسددها أرضية، لكن الظهير عادل خضري أبعد الكرة قبل أن تلج المرمى، ومن ركلة زاوية لعب العبود كرة عالية حولها الشهري برأسه لكنها مرت بجوار القائم رغم محاولة ماريو ميتاي اللحاق بها، واستمرت الهجمات الاتحادية وسدد محمد ودمبيا كرة قوية لكنها مرت بجوار القائم، لينتهي اللقاء بفوز الاتحاد بهدف دون مقابل وتأهله لدور الـ16، فيما غادر الوحدة منافسات المسابقة.

The Union began its journey to defend its title as champion of the most prestigious cup by winning against its host, Al-Wahda, with a score of one goal to none, in the match that took place at King Abdulaziz Sports City Stadium in Al-Shara'i, as part of the Round of 32 of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Cup.
Union entered this match after its coach, Laurent Blanc, relied on a large number of substitute names in addition to the return of Serbian goalkeeper Rajkovic to prepare him for the upcoming "Classico" against Al-Nassr on Friday. The match witnessed early dominance from the Union, and Muath Faqihi launched the ball from the left side and played a cross that hit the hand of defender Abdul Mohsen Faltah, leading referee Ahmed Al-Rumaikhani to award a penalty kick. Saleh Al-Shehri stepped up to take it and successfully shot it to the left of goalkeeper Abdullah Al-Owaisheer, scoring for the Union (9th minute). Al-Shehri nearly added a second goal after a brilliant individual effort from Abdulrahman Al-Aboud, who penetrated from the left side, entered the penalty area, and played it on the ground to Al-Shehri facing the goal, but he shot it over the crossbar. In a similar manner from the right side, Al-Aboud played a ground ball to Al-Shehri, who controlled the ball and shot it low, but defender Adel Khudari cleared it before it could enter the net. From a corner kick, Al-Aboud played a high ball that Al-Shehri headed, but it went past the post despite Mario Mitai's attempt to catch up with it. The Union's attacks continued, and Mohamed Waddambia struck a powerful shot, but it went past the post, ending the match with the Union winning one goal to none and qualifying for the Round of 16, while Al-Wahda exited the competition.
