The Supreme Court of Brazil has rejected the appeal for the release of former international football player Robinho, who is serving a nine-year prison sentence for gang rape.
The Supreme Court announced that the decision regarding the former Real Madrid and Brazilian national team striker was made by a majority vote during a virtual session.
Robinho has been in prison since March 2024, in the city of Tremembé, located 150 kilometers from São Paulo (southeast Brazil).
He was convicted of gang raping an Albanian girl who was celebrating her twenty-third birthday at a nightclub in Milan, Italy. The incident dates back to 2013, when Robinho was playing for Milan.
Brazilian law does not allow the extradition of its citizens, and after Robinho returned to Brazil during his trial in Italy in 2017, Italian justice requested that Robinho serve his sentence in his home country. Brazilian judicial authorities agreed to this.
Robson de Souza, his real name, turned himself in to Brazilian authorities at that time. His lawyers have filed multiple appeals in an attempt to overturn his prison sentence.
The player has always insisted on his innocence, attributing his conviction to "racism."
