يخوض الهلال اللقاء بعد فوزه على مانشستر سيتي الإنجليزي بنتيجة (4 - 3) في دور الـ16، في واحدة من أبرز مواجهات البطولة، ليصبح أول نادٍ آسيوي يهزم بطل أوروبا في نسخة كأس العالم الموسعة. في المقابل، تجاوز فلومينينسي عقبة إنتر ميلان الإيطالي بعدما انتصر عليه بهدفين، معتمدًا على تماسكه الدفاعي وسرعة التحول الهجومي.
وكان الهلال قد تعادل أمام ريال مدريد في دور المجموعات بهدف لمثله، ثم تعادل سلبيًا مع سالزبورغ، وفي الجولة الثالثة فاز (2 - 0) على باتشوكا ليجمع 5 نقاط ويتأهل ثانياً المجموعة.
وتعادل فلومينينسي سلبيًا مع بوروسيا دورتموند، ثم فاز (4 - 2) على أولسان، وختم بتعادل سلبي آخر مع ماميلودي ساندونز ليحصد 5 نقاط ويتأهل في المركز الثاني هو الآخر خلف دورتموند.
