The major controversy caused by the dispute between Portugal's national team captain Cristiano Ronaldo and his coach Jorge Jesus during the Copenhagen camp has loudly spilled into the streets of the Portuguese capital.
Cause of the Crisis
The relationship between Ronaldo and Jesus became tense due to "the Don" sitting on the bench during the match against Norway in the UEFA Nations League last Sunday.
Despite attempts to calm the situation, Ronaldo announced his departure from the Portugal camp in Denmark last Tuesday, just a few hours after Jesus's press conference, where he confirmed that he would not change his technical beliefs, even for the sake of the team captain.
3 Huge Banners in Lisbon
On Friday morning, the Portuguese capital Lisbon woke up to three huge banners in prominent locations, reflecting the state of discontent and division that the issue has stirred among fans, according to the Portuguese newspaper "A Bola."
The messages combined a clear expression of gratitude for the captain of Al-Nassr and the Portuguese national team, Cristiano Ronaldo, with a direct attack on coach Jorge Jesus's handling of the situation.
Support for Ronaldo and Criticism of Jesus
Two banners were placed, one near Humberto Delgado Airport and the other near the Estádio da Luz, home of Benfica. The third banner was placed near the "City of Football" in Cascais, the headquarters of the Portuguese Football Federation and the gathering center for the national team.
One of the banners read in large letters: "Thank you Cristiano Ronaldo for everything you have done for Portugal, thank you, captain!"
Another message stated: "Jesus has not been up to the responsibility due to his lack of sensitivity in dealing with Cristiano Ronaldo and his excessive arrogance."
Removal of the Banner Near the Federation Headquarters
However, the banner placed near the Portuguese Football Federation headquarters did not last long, as it was removed just a few hours after being discovered, on the grounds that it did not have the necessary permit, following a gathering of several people and media at the site.
