أوضح البرتغالي جورجي جيسوس، المدير الفني للمنتخب البرتغالي، سبب عدم مشاركة قائد الفريق كريستيانو رونالدو في مواجهة مضيفه النرويجي، التي انتهت بفوز منتخب بلاده بنتيجة (2-1)، في مباراة اكتفى «رونالدو» بمشاهدتها من على مقاعد البدلاء، ليحقق بذلك المنتخب البرتغالي فوزه الثاني على التوالي في دوري الأمم الأوروبية.
وقال جيسوس في المؤتمر الصحفي عقب اللقاء، رداً على سؤال حول عدم إشراك رونالدو: «كنت أرى أن مجريات اللقاء ربما كانت تتطلب شيئاً مختلفاً، وفي النهاية لم تكن اللحظة المناسبة لإشراكه».
وأضاف المدرب البرتغالي: «هناك مباريات أخرى يمكنه أن يساعدنا فيها كثيراً؛ فهو لاعب يمتلك خبرة كبيرة».
وتابع: «نعم كان خياراً مطروحاً أن يدخل في هذه المباراة، لكن ربما كنا بحاجة إلى لاعب بخصائص مختلفة في هذه المباراة».
واختتم جيسوس تصريحاته بالتأكيد على مكانة النجم البرتغالي في حساباته، قائلاً: «هذا لا يعني أنه خارج حساباتنا أو أفكارنا، نحن نعتمد عليه بالتأكيد، وربما سيكون دوره أكبر في مباريات أخرى».

He continued: "Yes, it was an option to bring him into this match, but perhaps we needed a player with different characteristics for this game."
Jesus concluded his statements by affirming the Portuguese star's place in his plans, saying: "This does not mean he is out of our calculations or ideas; we definitely rely on him, and perhaps his role will be bigger in other matches."
