British Prime Minister Andy Burnham emphasized yesterday (Saturday) that his government understands the importance of reassuring investors about its seriousness in addressing public finance challenges, asserting that market stability is a crucial step before proceeding with broader economic reforms.
Burnham's remarks come at a time when government borrowing costs in advanced economies have reached levels not seen in decades over the past few weeks, amid concerns about persistent inflationary pressures linked to the war with Iran, coinciding with rising levels of government borrowing.
The pressures have extended to Britain, where government borrowing costs have risen amid market fears about the new government's ability to control spending, as attention turns to the budget scheduled to be announced on October 28.
Burnham stated that Labour Party MPs do not seem prepared to make "significant cuts" to the social welfare budget, emphasizing that achieving stability and demonstrating readiness to tackle some tough issues is "of utmost importance."
He added that market stability would create the conditions for broader economic changes, which could ultimately contribute to improving the country's public finance situation.
