U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Pisent urged monetary policymakers at the Federal Reserve to keep all options open regarding interest rates, considering that productivity gains resulting from artificial intelligence and regulatory relief could help sustain economic growth without generating significant inflationary pressures.
Pisent stated during an interview with the "Sunday Morning Futures" program: "The U.S. economy is experiencing a phase of growth driven - in his estimation - by tax cuts and regulatory relief, at a time when high fuel prices, against the backdrop of the conflict with Iran, are putting pressure on American consumers ahead of the midterm elections in November."
He noted that Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh is aware of the productivity gains currently being witnessed in the economy, likening them to those achieved during the internet boom of the 1990s when Alan Greenspan was at the helm of the "Fed," and considering that the current gains could be even larger.
Pisent pointed out that Greenspan allowed the economy to continue growing amid improving productivity, adding that members of the Federal Reserve and those voting on monetary policy decisions should remain open to various possibilities when assessing the trajectory of interest rates.
Pisent believes that regulatory relief has contributed to increasing the productive capacity of the U.S. economy, which may allow for achieving higher growth rates without necessarily leading to a similar rise in inflation.
